These tracks were on flat ground before the flood

The flooding in Vermont has been devastating, especially in the Town of Ludlow near the Okemo Mountain Ski Resort. The link below shows a new gorge created by flash flood waters. Yes, these were active tracks. The rest of the video shows some of the other damage and cleanup operations underway.

Is there anything thay can be done to negate the possibility of future floodings?

I don't think there is much they can do in those mountainous surroundings.

Fortunately, that track is only used during the foliage season. They are hoping to have it operational again by fall. I wish them good luck.

@DWDavis It's unbelievable . I showed this to Hubby, daughter and son . . . they all said looks like some Indiana Jones set . How will they even fix something like that - I suppose the tracks will have to be rerouted.

@much2say The only thing I can think of for them to do is build a trestle bridge over the new gorge. There is no practical way to fill a gap that long and deep.

It's incredible that a gorge that deep could be gouged by one flash flood event.

That’s so sad. There’s a live webcam at a covered bridge in Mad River Valley, and I was absolutely shocked at the way the water rose there.

When we flood here, it's mostly rising water. Up there, the water gets channeled into the creek and river valleys and bulldozes everything in its path.

@DWDavis — the terrain up there is conducive to that. I remember going to the Johnstown Flood Historical Site a few years ago, and you could see how there was no way for the water to “rise.”

@FourWalls I am praying the dam the VT governor is worrying about holds. Have you heard anything about that?

Oh wow! There is certainly a lot of earth washed away there. And what a huge task it would be to repair it all.

I would imagine they must be going to build a trestle bridge of some type. I cannot imagine trying to refill the gorge.

@DWDavis And maybe just have it wash away again later.

The devastation in Vermont and Pennsylvania has been terrible. Roads washed out, businesses and homes destroyed. I pray for everyone there.

This is scary, the north of Switzerland had horrible weather yesterday. We had a lot of rain, but minor damages.

That is one hell of a flood! I hope no-one was in the path of all that water. If they're going to re-instate an active line there it's going to need quite a big bridge!

That site is not available here, but I saw the footage here instead
Drone video from Ludlow, Vermont shows a large gorge that has formed underneath train tracks that pass through Okemo Mountain Resort. The active train tracks host a fall foliage train each year.

I caught this on yesterday evening's NBC News, on YouTube, but this link had much more detail, although there was no sound
