Baseball is a game of statistics. People talk about records in the grand old game that’ll never be broken. Among them: *St. Louis Cardinals 3rd baseman Fernando Tatis Sr. hitting two grand slams in the same inning *Cincinnati Reds pitcher Johnny Vander Meer pitching two consecutive no-hitters *Yankee great Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak. Certainly the career victories by Cy Young — 511 — is another record that won’t be broken. These days, we’ll be lucky to see a pitcher get 300 victories in a career, never mind 500! Denton True Young was born in Gilmore, Ohio in 1867. After going to the Gnadenhütten site I ran over Gilmore (seriously, there’s nothing there, not so much as a highway sign telling you that you’re in Gilmore) on my way to Peoli, where Young is buried. The photos above are two different angles of his grave. The top photo shows mementos left: a Reds logo cap (Young never played for the Reds, but this is Ohio), a pack of sunflower seeds, a number of baseballs, and a Cleveland cap. His epitaph describes his victories, no-hitters, and perfect game (which, at the time he pitched it in 1904, wasn’t a big deal [if you look at the news accounts of Vander Meer’s first of two consecutive no-hitters it was barely mentioned as a big deal]). How good was Cy Young? The premiere award in pitching excellence is named for him. It was a necessary stop for a baseball junkie like myself.

From what I’ve read he was just a humble neighbor. There aren’t any neon signs around “Cy Young lived here!” His neighbors probably knew he wouldn’t have wanted it.

@LadyDuck — right now it’s excellent, but the “dog days of summer” are supposed to arrive, right on cue, this week. It’s late July, of course it’s going to be hot.

None like him since, that’s for certain. Walter Johnson is in second place, with 417 wins.

It’s so out of the way, and I was out of the way near it, so why not?

I remember Cy Young's name. That's about it. I was submitted to double header games on the weekends when I was a kid. Sitting in the bleachers roasting for hours did not make me a fan. Enjoy your day!

No 6-inning starts back then. Cy Young was one of many rubber-armed pitchers during that era who rarely were taken out of the game, even when behind in the score. Young pitched for Cleveland franchises in both the NL and AL. He had a stint in St. Louis and helped the Bosox win the 1903 World Series. Cool photo!

Yeah, Cy played all the time because the other eight guys played all the time. Of course, most of these pitchers make more per inning than Young did his entire career.

@dgobucks226 — “he’s the ace of the team because he’s the only pitcher with an ERA under six.”

@FourWalls Yes, and look at some of their ERA's.

That’s a good stop to make. Yes, with the way they use pitchers these days we won’t be getting a lot of 300 game winners at all. Cy Young is worth paying homage too.

I don’t know if 250 will be the benchmark going forward. Sad, in a way.

I can certainly understand how you could not pass up a chance to stop and honor this baseball legend.

Even the best pitchers of my time, like Bob Gibson and Randy Johnson, don’t hold a candle to Cy Young.
