In a couple of hours there’ll be another one of those myLot things that the authorities fear. Details will be forthcoming later. But for now, there’s another song that wasn’t allowed on some radio stations way back when. #9: Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison Back in the Puritan days of the U.S.A., saying horrible things like “making love in the green grass” would get you kicked off the radio. Good thing they didn’t have radio in the 18th century!!! Ah, but they did have radio in the 1960s, and Van the Man got kicked off a number of stations for the line “making love in the green grass” in this song. His record company re-edited the song, using the line “laughing and running” from earlier in the song. Some stations, though, still kept it off the air. Apparently “my, how you have grown” means she was pregnant. (Side note: when Jimmy Buffett covered this on One Particular Harbour, he DID change the “my, how you have grown” line to “my, where the time’s all gone”…not like the guy who wrote and recorded “Why Don’t We Get Drunk” had a morality attack or anything…) It’s getting close to 60 years on for this song, and it’s still around in its original glory. Brown Eyed Girl Written by Van Morrison Recorded by Van Morrison From Blowin’ Your Mind!, 1966 Reason banned: reference to sex Cast my memory back that long:

Oh my gosh, I loved Brown Eyed Girl! That was a great song, back in the 60s:) I always thought, my how you have grown! As being, how she had transformed into a young lady.

I thought about it as someone getting older as well, especially in light of the line “cast my memory back that long.” A few months of a pregnancy isn’t “back that long.”

@kobesbuddy — there was a book called Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? by John R. Powers, about growing up in Catholic schools. That was actually a rule: you couldn’t wear black patent leather shoes because they might be used to see up a girl’s dress.

@FourWalls The ones who rise up against these musicians, are simply dirty minded! They are scouting for utter filth, to invent a bogus conclusion.

Funny how some phrases really cause a sir. Glad we can still enjoy the originals. I love YouTube for giving us that.

Yes, you can find old raunchy songs from the 30s and 40s, too. They were common, just not “popular” on the radio.

Oh beautiful..good memories on this one for me. It is always amusing to me how Van never sounds Irish to me.

@FourWalls I always had the radio going in my mom's apartment and she got to like a lot of rock and roll. This was also a favorite song for her because she had brown eyes otherwise she said a great deal of songs are about blue eyes which I have.

@NJChicaa — well, go wash your ears out with pool water, then! (Unless it’s still green) (The pool water, not your ears. )

@FourWalls Yes. I can't stand the song. It is right up there with "American Pie" and pretty much anything Stevie Nicks or Steely Dan sing.

Some people just have dirty minds. "Making love" could just as well mean staring adoringly at someone.

“Making love” meant a completely different thing back in the 30s and 40s. They also called it “pitching woo.”

This is a great song. I saw Van Morrison in the Wax Museum in Dublin and he looked nothing like I thought he'd look. Maybe I've seen him in photos but I don't remember seeing him at all.

Making love in the green grass can be risky. Take it from me. And I have brown eyes. Enjoy your day. P. S. Yes, I know this song very well.
