Traveling

My big dream when I retired was to do a lot of traveling. I wanted to see several cities in the U.S. as well as Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Thailand, Tibet, and several others. The only problem was I hadn't won the lottery or saved any huge amount of $$$$. So nowadays I just dream. sometimes I go online and pretend I'm going someplace. I find the hotel where I'd like to stay and look up tour options for that area. Google Maps help me see the area where I'll be staying as well as the surroundings. Did you know there is actually a Bill of Rights for air travelers? The Department of Transportation really wants to educate people about their rights. The first bill came out in July 2022 and helps people with disabilities while traveling. Being treated with respect and dignity is just the beginning. It goes on to help with accessible airport facilities, the right to both assistance at airports, and the right to travel with service animals and any other needed devices. This all started with President Ronald Reagan signing into law the Air Carrier Access Act in 1986. The new document is a shorter more user-friendly document that travelers can carry with them. It is for anyone who has been temporarily or permanently impacted by a major life activity such as hearing, breathing, or walking. This Bill of Rights applies to all flights on United States airlines and flights on foreign airlines that leave or arrive in the United States. The only exception is if any of these rights do not comply with either government security or safety laws. The airline needs to be made aware of these needs in advance so they have time to accommodate you. You can reach them online at or call TSA Cares at (855) 787-2227. They are available from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET on weekends and holidays. If any problems are encountered ask your airline to call in a Complaint Resolution Official(CRO). If you are still not satisfied with the services you receive you have the right to file a complaint with the airline or the Department of Transportation Aviation Consumer Protection Division. There can be fines issued for violation of the Air Carrier Access Act. Did you know any of this was in place? Have you ever had to utilize any of these?

@celticeagle Armchair travelling brings its own rewards and you avoid the crowds and bad service of the travel industry. And places usually look more picturesque in photos. And cleaner, quieter and cheaper.

I hope the Bill of Rights will be respected, I had some horrible air flights in the past, people treated like cattle.

I've only ever flown in Canada, but I assume we have a similar measure in place.

Pretty and I traveled most of the US when she was young. I made good money and chose to spend it driving around our country while I could still enjoy it. (Yes, we really could use some of that money now but I'm glad it was spent on something I wanted to do instead.) I've only flown twice. Once in a single-engine aircraft when a friend took me up in his plane and once on a helicopter tour over Branson, Missouri. I'm scared of heights but felt comfortable with my friend. I will never get into another helicopter again, though. No, I didn't know about the Air Bill of Rights but have no desire to fly on a commercial plane.

@celticeagle There are some things that people need to do while they're young enough to enjoy them. I always feel sorry for the people who save all their life for their old age and then they aren't healthy enough to do anything after they retire. (Mostly, their kids pester them for the savings anyway. I don't have to worry about that.)

I do that too. I sometimes look up flights to different places. Recently I have been getting Travel and Leisure magazines in the mail and I had been "dreaming" about the places they mention in them. I used to say I would "travel" when I do receipt tasks on MTurk.

I wasn't aware of all of this. I have mobility issues; but I can no longer fly because I can't navigate all the walking involved to the airport, etc. Thank you for posting this. Enjoy your day.
