The more birthday candles you have on your cake the more you need to look into certain foods. Like, take fiber for instance. Constipation becomes more common as those candles stack up. For a man who is 51 or older, he needs to eat 30 grams of fiber each day. For women, that number is 21. Whole grain is rich in B vitamins. This can also help cut your chances of getting diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Such things as whole wheat couscous, Quinoa, whole wheat bread, and wheat berries are all very tasty.
Here are some other things to add to your diet:
* Nuts- Pistachios, almonds, walnuts, pecans, and cashews can all help delay or prevent stroke, type 2 diabetes, age-related heart disease, and nerve disease.
* Fish- tuna, salmon, herring, and farmed trout. These fatty fish all have DHA in them, an Omega 3 fatty acid.
* Red and Orange Colored Produce- Tomatoes, watermelon, strawberries, and red and orange bell peppers have Lycopene in them. Foods with this in them can both protect you against strokes and lower your risk of some types of cancer.
* Lean Protein- Dairy products, eggs, and lean meat instead of protein powders. Dairy products contain calcium which is good for bone health and lowers the risk of osteoporosis. Such things as tofu, soy drinks, rice, yogurt, and fortified orange juice are all good sources.
* Also dark green vegetables such as spinach, collard greens, and kale, contain antioxidants that can help lower the chances of macular degeneration and cataracts. These help with thinking, judgment, and memory as well.

Well it certainly isn't pretzels anyway..something I love and now when I eat them, I bloat out like a freaking balloon with all the salt.

Yes, and they aren't all that enjoyable without the salt.

Recently had a conversation about diet with the practice nurse. The tick list they give them asks about "a portion of whole grains every day". I don't even eat grains every day!
I asked "is this about fibre?" and she told me it was.
I get a variety of fibre from fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and when I do have rice, for example, I will usually have brown rice. I won't eat wholegrain bread because it gives me heartburn (who knows what it will do to me further along the digestive tract!) but can have wholegrain pasta so I often do.
Fibre is good but it also needs to be a variety of fibre.

We all have certain sensitivities. Fiber is very important for older folks.

I'm glad you like their taste, that's part of the battle I think.
