Crying Is Good For Us

Crying is often thought of as a weak response. The other day my daughter started crying because we were talking about my mom and she misses her right now. My grandson comforted her and it was such a sweet scene. It just makes me angry when crying is thought of as weak. Crying is actually healthy and has its benefits. It is unique to humans and is a natural response to deep sadness or just the opposite of joy and happiness. What about the release the act gives us of both emotional pain and stress? Professionals call it 'repressive coping' when we hold things in and don't cry. But emotional tears actually flush stress hormones and other toxins out of our bodies. What are called reflex or continuous tears remove debris such as dust and smoke and lubricate the eyes to protect them from infection. Yes, crying is good for us. Teaching men and boys that it's okay to cry can reduce negative health, both physical and mental, behaviors and let them live fuller and happier lives. Crying in babies does not necessarily mean there is something wrong. If a newborn isn't crying it can mean it may be having breathing difficulties. The tears of crying are known as a natural anti-depressant. Studies have shown that tears can improve one's mood and even make a person feel more positive.

Refraining from crying is wrong, I think that men should stop this and cry as women do, that would be better for their mood.

I find that men who cry are seen as more courageous than those who don't.

@celticeagle There is this ridiculous habit to tell to male children that crying is a sign of weakness.

Crying is a natural release of sadness. The only thing I don't like is that it stuffs me up so that I can't breathe! Have a good week.

Absolutely agree. It's good to cry and let our emotions out. It doesn't help to bottle it all in.

Everyone cries in sorrow or in happiness. You're right there's something good in crying. It relieves something for after crying you feel good.

Crying is a good way of letting out pent up emotions. I usually feel better after a good cry.

I say yes to tears. Bottling up grief, anger, frustration etc just makes for a disaster waiting to happen.

Yeah it is good for us. I read an article from the Atlantic magazine about a man who had to teach himself to cry. He had stopped crying for many years. The thing that helped him cry was to think of his parents dying.
