Am I Missing Something?

This time next week I’ll have my vinyl privacy fence up and won’t have to worry about the big-butt dog next door possibly jumping the fence and having me for a snack. Part of the process involves calling 811 (the BUD - “Before U Dig” - people) to have the property marked as to where the underground utilities are.
Here’s where I wondering if I’m missing something. Obviously there’s no public utility buried in my back yard, but I do understand the necessity to “make sure.” And, as it doesn’t cost anything, it doesn’t bother me to call and have it checked.
However….
When I got the e-mail notifying me that all the utilities had checked and assured me that there truly ARE no public utilities in my back yard, the message concluded with a notice that “this is good for 21 days.”
Are they going to sneak in my back yard and bury a fiber optic cable for the local cable company in a month or something???
I personally think it’s the perpetual nosiness of the government (“we want to know what you’re up to, and what better way than to have you call us and tell us under the pretense of checking for a buried gas line”), but it just struck me as weird that they want you to call again in three weeks should something like weather postpone the work.
And Talking Heads told us “Don’t Worry About the Government”!

Not to mention that I’ve lived here 34 years, and no new utilities have been dug.

@FourWalls They are so annoying, you would know for sure. Stupid things happen also here. Five years ago, the phone company wanted to install fiber optic in this area. They asked us and the neighbor to sign a paper to authorize them to enter a property because the owner was abroad! Of course we signed nothing.

The BUD people are just full of silliness and other stuff too. I"m glad you're putting up a fence. It's good for a lot of reasons. Have a great day.

I think it was the great Will Rogers who said “good fences make good neighbors.”

Just another automated response.
Either that or the garden gnomes are getting cable.

I had a privacy fence way back when, and my favorite punk band (Ike and the Ice Storm
) knocked it down. Replacing it.

I used to have nightmares about the great dane down the street leaping over three backyard fences (in a single bound, yet) and attacking me, so I understand your worry. That was in the days when fences were only 3 feet tall...

The chain link fence is 4’ tall, but the dog behind us has jumped two fences to end up in my yard. Thankfully, she’s a sweetheart…I’d keep a rope by the back door so I could walk her home.

We had to have that done when the internet cable was buried across our back yard. The only thing in our yard was the gas line and electric cables under the driveway.
When the internet cable had to be re-buried because the workmen screwed up, they had to call again to have the buried lines marked.

I don’t think they allow utilities to be buried in back yards here. But you never know.

@FourWalls This house was built in the 1930s or 40s and you never know what was allowed back then.

And the important question here, since it’s government that we’re talking about…21 calendar days or 21 business days?!

That sounds interesting but I think they just want to keep you on your toes like in case a major highway might have to go through your property

That won’t happen, I’ve seen that Bugs Bunny cartoon (No Parking Hare) too many times.

Won’t protect me from the government though.
