China Offering Money Incentive for Younger Marriages to Increase Birthrate

It seems that a county in the eastern province of Zhejiang China(Changshan) is offering couples who marry while the bride is 25 years old or younger a cash reward of 1000 yuan (or $ 137 USD). This incentive, which is restricted to couples marrying for the first time, is part of various measures of experimentation by officials at multiple levels of government to increase the birthrate. This after the population declined last year for the first time in six decades. This area has also announced a number of subsidies to help parents with fertility, childcare, and education. Since 2021 couples have been allowed to have as many as three children. They are abolishing the "one-child policy" that prevailed from the late 1970s to 2016 to prevent the population from growing too quickly. The fertility rate of China hit a record low of 1.09 last year even with government efforts to bring it up. The countries with populations of over 100 million had the lowest number of children per woman. The lowest number of marriages since 1986 was at 6.8 million. Social media users criticize the cash reward and feel that the amount is a "drop in the bucket" compared to the high cost of raising a child in China's highly competitive society. While others say it discriminates against women by omitting any age requirement for men.

I'm surprised that they want to INCREASE the population. This could backfire if many couples take advantage of it. I don't think the monetary reward would accomplish much though. I hope you have a great holiday weekend.

It seems there is such a news but I don't think it will be a bit helpful actually. At first, this money is not enough to increase the rate of marriages. Getting married costs much more and it is a big issue. Today couples don't even want to have children, no matter one or two. As the pressure and costs are higher and higher. The problem is they just don't want to do some practical methods.

@youless Somehow in India too, we are having similar issues. The cost of Healthcare and Education is so high that if one is not earning, they have to go for loans which out a crushing burden in the families. Then, most of the jobs are in Private and Informal sector, where there is often no job security. I see more men and some women avoiding marrying even when they are 32 or even 35. Governments - whether State or Central are not investing much in tbe Education sector, probably much lesser than what the Chinese Government spends on the Education sector. So yes, common folks struggle while the political class enjoys. This is indeed the harsh reality.

The article said that area would help with education costs. Is there an increase in COVID as there is here in US?

@youless Yes there are good developments in Government funded schools and schemes like Mid Day Meals. Yet there are certain quality issues and the Middle Class is mostly left to fend on their own vis-a-vis higher Tuition Fees in Private schools and extra spending to prepare for competitive exams once they get to the college going age. So yes, it is not very bad but there are challenges as well.

Apart from the one child policy, the high cost of living in Modern China could be a big factor though. I think in the developing countries, Governments have Fund crunch plus since the political class takes out most of the funds available and leaves lesser amounts for the public. Then the Governments announces the money they give to people as a "Great measure", "People Friendly act" and so on. Yet the common folks have a lot of struggles to tackle in day to day lives.

It is surprising. I think some policies should be implemented in India to reduce the population of the country which is getting higher day by day.

I think 6 billion in the world is enough personally. Especially with the problems in the world as it stands today.

People should be able to marry if and when they want and have the number of babies they want. If they don't want to have kids then they should be able to not have them.

Almost all countries have a problem of aging population and not enough children. Several European countries give incentive to have children

It is a normal thing. It is getting so expensive to have children nowadays. Incentive is nice but kids are an issue financially for about 20 years.

I think the government should keep its hands off the size of families. They insisted on decreasing the population and it worked.. Now they’re going the other way.
