Oh, did this one almost make the top ten! One of the reasons I like doing month-long countdowns is I can feature songs that “almost” made the top ten, and this one certainly deserves to be featured. I hope you enjoy today’s funny song.
Just a Big Ego - Bob Rivers
Last month I dealt with the media monster Clear Channel Communications (now known as I Heart Radio) and their stupidity. Today’s song shows another thing that big radio media killed: the brilliance of local DJs.
When I was stationed in Norfolk there was a DJ named Henry “The Bull” Del Toro. That guy was nuts. He was also very politically incorrect, getting suspended (and ultimately fired) for it more than once. He was on WNOR, while K-94 had “Zonar” (Jim Stanley), who did a marvelous rap in the middle of Blondie’s “Rapture.”
Up in Boston, Bob Rivers was delighting listeners of WAAF-FM with his parodies. This one, a takeoff of David Lee Roth’s ego and cover of “Just a Gigolo”/“I Ain’t Got Nobody” (which was a hit for Louis Prima in the 50s), is stinking BRILLIANT because it captures both Roth’s singing AND the essence of him as a big-ass rock star who thought he was the best.
This was so popular that it was actually released as a single nationwide, something very unusual for a local DJ to get. But that’s the thing we had back then…and it’s gone from radio now.
Of course, we always have You Tube….

I know. One of the Reasons I think Fast Times At Ridgemont High is so horribly dated is the hair.

Most people don’t. People like Roth make up for the ones who lack an ego.

It’s funny on its own, but if you’re not a fan of David Lee Roth (and I’m not), it’s even better!

I hadn’t seen the video until a few years ago, and to me it makes the song even funnier.

Roth’s arrogance so deserved this skewering, too!
