Disaster of kidney failure

While a normal person should eat bananas, food rich in protein and most of all consume plenty of water a patient with kidney failure has to stop eating bananas and other foods that contain potassium, stop eating eggs and other protein rich foods and the sad part is they have to drink less water. Ironic indeed.
And these diet restrictions severely impact one and cause other health issues including the heart.
Moral of the story. Take care of your kidneys before they fail. This link tells you how

Uhm... I've been having trouble with my kidneys for years because a previous doctor gave me meds that caused my kidneys to begin shutting down. Even after the doctor told me to stop taking the meds, my kidneys have never functioned at 100%.
My doctor always runs tests on my kidneys and told me yesterday to stop eating potassium rich foods (chocolate, nuts, dried fruit) and drink LOTS of water. I already drink a gallon of water every day but the doctor told me to drink more than that....

@crossbones27 All I can say is what my doctor told me yesterday. Maybe there are different kinds of kidney problems. I don't know.

@DaddyEvil Yes, there are different types of kidney disease. I knew someone who was drinking all these MLM protein shakes to lose weight and she damaged her kidneys badly. My sister was told to drink about five standard water bottles of water per day and avoid certain foods, but she had stones. We have been to ER today with some kidney or bladder issues for Bob.

@DaddyEvil Could be, I do think most will say just do not go overboard. People think well if this is good, lets do more than necessary. No, its only good if that is what your body requires. If doctor told you a gallon a day he may be right. It depends on weight and how active you are or just how much you sweat. My friends mom is in late 70's and cannot move well, so doubt she really needs that much water.

Bob has kidney problems caused by his heart medicines and by his cancer treatments. At this time they do not restrict his potassium or protein, and they want him to drink more water BUT his heart cannot handle more water as it collects around it. It becomes more and more difficult to be healthy.Medicines that help his heart hurt his kidneys.

@allknowing No, but he is on a diuretic. Until he spent all the time in the hospital last year he never had swelling. I am sure some types of kidney disease are as you say. I also have known people who had to cut out all the potassium rich foods, but Bob does not have those orders. As I posted in another response I had a coworker that severely damaged her kidneys with protein drinks. So when I was making protein shakes for Bob I was also asking about that.

I always thought defective kidneys cannot take the load of too much water consumption. Is there a swelling round your husband's ankles?

Yes that is how a kidney failure is managed when it comes to diet But may be there are other kidney issues where drinking water is recommended.

When kidneys in bad shape, have to do everything a lot less to make them work less I hard. I heard at that point just cranberries and and cabbage is good for kidneys. Problem is cranberries and juice have natural sugar and sugar is actually very bad for kidneys and liver.
So maybe food just like cabbage. Kidney beans are not even good for kidneys if they in bad shape because they have lots of magnesium and potassium.

You can get your blood checked to get a kidney profile atleast once a year. If the report is fine there is no need for you to diet.

They have to limit intake of water because they cannot excrete them out already due to kidney failure.

@allknowing Hubby's nephrologist says to drink when thirsty but not to drink to excess. I look at the pads of his fingers and they are shriveled as if he is dehydrated. His doctors all try to work to find what is best for him.

@GardenGerty Maybe he should drink water using straw as in just sip the water so that it will not put much pressure on the kidneys.
