Hamburg to Southampton.

After spending a lovely day in Hamburg and all the German passengers had boarded we made our way 70 miles down the Elbe river back to the sea to head back to Southampton where the official start of the World cruise started. We had a day to explore Southampton & caught the bus to the centre of the town. There is a lot of history in & around the town including the original walls from Roman & Saxon times although much of the walls date back to the 13th Century. There are quite a few timbered buildings from the 15th Century & of course the Titanic Museum. Many of the staff on the Titanic were local people 549 to be exact who perished when it hit an iceburg & sank. There is a Titanic walk visiting the memorials and museum. After a bit of shopping we returned to the ship left our stuff in the cabin & headed for the Queens Ballroom where a Military band marched & played music for 30 minutes to mark the start of the World cruise. At 6PM the ship was untied & we set off on our world Voyage at the same time as the Queen Mary. Our ship, the Queen Victoria, led the way down the river to the English channel. There was a massive firework display celebrating our departure. We were crossing the North Atlantic & would reach New York 9 days later.

It was a great start to the world cruise, The Hamburg part was supposed to be part of a Christmas cruise in 2022 but it was cancelled because of covid. It was great as we had 11 suitcases. The porter joked thats a lot for a 4 day cruise. I laughed & said plus 103 nights from Wednesday though! So 107 in total. I know it is such a shame the photos are not showing!

@garymarsh6 I agree that 11 suitcases for 4 days would be a lot even for the Royals. I miss the photos, often a photo is needed to explain better what we are writing.

Here in the eastern US, our historic artifacts mostly measure a few scant centuries old. I can only try to imagine how it felt to see remnants dating back a thousand years or more.

My friend from NC came & spent 2 weeks here. I took them to many historical places in the UK they loved them all. We then made a quick 4 day trip to Paris which they loved too!

Always, sort of, fancied a cruise, but I get sea sick very easily. Even crossing the North Sea when it was as flat as a mill pond left me queasy

I used Avomine & funnily enough we had a Canadian astronaut giving a few tips. Apparently NASA recommend it for travel sickness. The only time l was really sick was on the Queen Mary 2 which is one of the most stable ships on the ocean as it was specifiucally built for the Atlantic crossings. It is the only liner left in the world.
