An example of the Mandela effect

A MyLotter just wrote an interesting discussion about the Mandela effect which is when a large proportion of the population ‘misremembers a significant event or shares a memory of an event that did not actually occur.’ Some time back I wrote about our ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) Fact Checker which checks if information being transmitted is in fact true or not. Many Australians have believed for a long time that Australian aborigines were once part of the Flora and Fauna Act and not recognised as part of the mainstream population. It now seems that this is not the case and indigenous Australians were counted in the census from 1947. However those living in really remote areas were not included. Some myths hang around for a very long time.

This is true, some myths continue to hang around despite the fact that now there are many different ways to check if those are real or fake.

@JudyEv I have this feeling and the more they use their phones for a quick search of the news, the more they accept the first thing they read.

@LadyDuck And very few are prepared to spend much time at all checking out anything.

Many people don't bother to check the facts but just accept what they read. The more outrageous the more likely they are to believe it.

Yes, they do.It is funny what people believe. I have imagined a person who does not seem to exist from my college days. I cannot remember her name, but I remember a face and personality, but cannot find any pictures of her.

There are some kids from school that I have no recollection of but that's the opposite of what you're saying.

@judyev And there is also the falsely perceived truth that all Irish people are overly bibulous, fractious, Catholic (lapsed of course) and that we go around lilting top o‘ the morning and begorah.

That's so true. Our son doesn't like anyone telling Irish jokes. We say we don't mind jokes against Australians but he says that's because we're not a minority group which is probably fair enough. Certainly some nationalities become very stereotyped.

No matter how outrageous, repeated lies become the truth - comes to mind. We tend to believe what we want to believe.
