If it was your last chance of staying alive, would you accept the heart or kidney of a pig?
All over the world there are people waiting for transplants of human organs - but there is not enough. The waiting list is long - very long.
So for a long time now researchers have been looking at alternatives and there has been some measure of success.
On September 23, they transplanted the heart of a pig into a dying man, the next day he was sitting up in bed and cracking jokes.
This procedure has been done before but the recipient lived only 2 months.
Now just a few days ago a pig's kidney was transplanted into another dying man.
Seems like soon enough pigs will be organ donors for humans along with appearing on their dinner table. What do you think?

It's kind of mind boggling that pigs organs can be transplanted into humans. I'm really on the fence about if I would accept a pigs organs to stay alive.

@FourWalls What! , but pigs are already used for human consumption. Pork is a national dish in some countries. Some people roast a whole pig for celebrations.

I don't know... in one way it would just be a "spare part" that's being installed in place of something that was defective... in another way, it's like stealing the pig's life to keep me alive. If I'm dying anyway, I'd probably accept the transplant.

That is very encouraging research. I know pig values have been used for human heart values for a long time.

I know that doctors have been using pig valves on humans for awhile now. I know a few people who have had the surgery and are doing well. As far as the entire heart, I am not sure about that. I would have to pray and think long and hard before making such a decision.

At this stage I would not go for a heart transplant though I am a heart patient.

Pig is genetically closest to humans. I think someday, pigs will be organ donors for humans.

As long as the pig organs help people and the people can handle it, I could never handle having an organ replaced and would rather then end this life,
