Late Night Update

Earlier I shared that my grandmother had been sick and went to the E.R. via ambulance.
It ended up that she was admitted to the hospital for very low sodium levels. That was caused by her being "sick" all day. Now, they haven't said what caused her feeling so sick though. I know she had been feeling pretty crappy most of the week.
She has COPD, heart issues, and lately she has had a lot of anxiety. I know the mix of all that would make a person feel bad enough.
I hope they figure out what is causing her to feel so bad.
Tonight my mom is staying with my grandfather, but tomorrow I'll have to go be there when my mom goes back to check on my grandma. Then my uncle will come up during the weekend, which will help.
Tonight really scared me though because my grandpa got up to go to the restroom and he fell. He should be using a walker, but he won't. Thankfully he was able to get himself up and go back to bed.
They are both in pretty bad condition....so don't really know what to do.
Anyways, just sharing what I know so far. Will update more tomorrow.

I'm sorry your grandmother is in the hospital with low sodium levels. I hope they find the cause. I'm sorry your grandfather fell when he got up to use the bathroom. I'm glad he could get himself back to bed.
I will keep them in prayer.

I am sorry too, that's the 2nd time she's been to the ER/hospital this year. and I am just glad he didn't really hurt himself. It sounded very painful and he's pretty weak.

It seems as though not only does age make us weaker, but also more stubborn. I don't know how many times I have heard about older people falling because they refused to use a cane or walker. I will continue to pray for all of you.
It is so hard to see the bodies of our loved ones start to go downhill.

Oh really? Well if that is so, I am already pretty stubborn so can't imagine how bad I will be when I am older lol! But yes...maybe they just don't want to admit they are getting older and that they need help even if it is just the use of a cane/walker. With my grandpa it may be that he forgets he needs to use it because of his dementia. However he remembered to take his pills this evening and knew exactly where they were...so hard to say.
I didn't know you were, I am sure they would appreciate that. I am not a religious person but I think they are.

@MommyOfEli2013 My dad is so stubborn he has lamented to me he would be unbearably stubborn if he got dementia.

Your grandmother must be exhausted, COPD alone is enough to make her that way, adding in heart issues and worry about your grandfather, plus the care of him, must be more than she can manage with her own health so poor. I hope your family can come up with some solutions for their care. I know from my own experience that it is very difficult to watch those we love fail in health.

We have no idea what to do to help them. My suggestion is he goes somewhere he can be taken care of better...I know help would make my grandma feel better but she wouldn't want him to be somewhere else.

@MarieCoyle Well after them being married 60+ years...I think she just can't imagine him being somewhere else. We can help her a lot better than my grandfather. My grandpa can't really tell us what he needs anymore...

I would think it would be truly impossible for her to even try to care for him--she's on oxygen, COPD, heart issues...it's good to be loyal to him because she loves him, I get that. It's admirable. But she is evidently not able to do it anymore. Someone may have to see that they both go somewhere in order for them to have proper care.

If someone falls and you need to help them get up, put a straight backed chair, like a dining chair in front of them so they can pull themselves up. That way you will not hurt yourself or them trying to help them up. If it has been hot your grandma may have sweat to the point of being imbalanced with her sodium. Also some heart meds can deplete your levels. It sounds like they need to be in a long term care facility.

He usually crawls to the bed and gets himself up. He probably wouldn't use a chair, he's stubborn.
No, her sodium went really low because she was throwing up all day. We already knew the cause of that. Just don't know what caused her to be sick all day.
I know my grandpa needs to be in a place like that, but she'd never send him there. But I know she's so stressed and that makes everything worse.

Isn’t it weird…”they” all warn us about “too much sodium,” but then too little sodium can make us sick as well.
I hope your grandmother gets well quickly.

Yeah, that's true...who is this they anyway! Can't win either way with sodium I guess.
She hasn't been well in a long time, but well enough to go home would be good

@MommyOfEli2013 Your grandfather could break something. Does he use a cane or a walker?

Definitely not a good weekend. He's fallen 6 times in the past 24 hours; well not sure if he fell anytime after we left tonight. I hope they figure her out too, but they usually just fix her sodium and send her home.

@LindaOHio I am surprised he hasn't broken anything with all the falls. He doesn't use either. Well today he has used it, but only because his son got on him about it, when he goes home I bet he'll stop using it again..
