The Black Cat Misconception

Did you know that black cats have the highest rate of euthanasia of any other cat? Yes, 74.6% to be correct. Research says that some black cats have even been returned to animal shelters.....get aloud of this.....because they aren't photogenic enough. They also have the lowest rate of adoption at 10%. This seeming bias is so prevalent that The Association for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has set up a special holiday "Black Cat Appreciation Day". This is to help in their adoption. You see there is the old myth that black cats are bad luck, that if you stumble across one your future will be bleak indeed. Well, poo poo on this. In Japan, black cats symbolize good luck. In Egypt, black cats were once worshipped as royalty as well as thought to protect their owners from bad energy. As the token Halloween cat they do tend to give off a spooky vibe and are playful and curious, but what cat isn't? Loving and loyal they can be quite friendly when meeting someone new. Also being silly creatures they will keep you in stitches. As family members, they are affectionate with a bounding energy. Some research says that black cats are actually healthier than others. It seems that the gene that gives them their coloring allegedly is the same one that protects cats from certain common diseases like feline immunodeficiency virus, the cat version of HIV. The black cat is also thought to symbolize both healing and health. They have strong energy and some legends say that a cat can rub up against or walk by a sick person and cure them. As well as the beautiful, panther-like features of the black cat the eumelanin (a pigment) also gives these cats yellow/gold, copper, or emerald green eyes. The same thing that impacts the cats' irises, adds to their striking nature- especially when set against their dark coat. Some adoptees reject the black cat due to its unphotogenic nature while others see their stunning features. One can feel their mysticism and power. With secrecy, elegance, and wisdom this creature is special. And remember, by adopting a black cat you are helping to break the stigmas against them.

@celticeagle Morticia's mom is all gray so her coloring comes from her cat dad who is black and white.

My black cat chose us as her new family. We found her hugging a tree one cold evening. We tried to call her over to the car when we were dropping someone off at their house. She just stared. It wasn't until the car door opened, my relative got out, and she jumped in. That was ten years ago. She's still around reminding us who runs the house.

In England black cats were mostly considered lucky. It's only in recent times under outside influences it has been changed. One of my cats is black and she's actually the third black cat to live here. Mostly it is black and white cats here that are less adopted - which is why I tend to adopt those. Imagine being so addicted to putting your life on line that you get rid of a pet for not being "photogenic"! Remember when photographs were expensive because you had to get film developed and when you did you could only show them to people you were physically around?

We have had several black cats. through the years. Our black cats have all been photogenic. The old days of photography seemed more of an adventure.
