They changed the date of the holiday.

Normally in my country we would have a holiday on October 12, the day that Columbus arrived to America. I will not say that he discovered it because he did not even know that it was a continent different than the one he was looking for. It was someone else that said that it was another continent and is why America has his name. Still, for centuries the Natives from this continent were called Indians as Columbus thought that he had reached India. Lately in many countries statues of Columbus are not wanted and there is no holiday that reminds us of the date. In my country people want to earn more money and work less. It doesn´t matter how it is done. So we are celebrating today (October 9th) the 12 of October so that people can have a long weekend. And nobody cares about Columbus. I sometimes wonder if we will change Christmas and put together Christmas and New Year in order to go to the beach and have fun. As for me, I am retired and all days are holidays provided that it is not cold. If I were rich, I´d have a house in the other hemisphery to live there when it is winter here. But now I´m not worrying. I can walk inside my house (that is warmer) in flip flops. The temperature is rising. See you friends.

They drove us crazy in grade school. Every Columbus Day we had to recite Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. I live in my Crocs both inside and outside most of the year but have two pairs of sport shoes if needed.

I learned a lot of real History after I left school. Many grade teachers had no idea at all about what they were saying. My father (a reknowned biochemist) taught me Biology but told me not to repeat it in school or the teacher would give me a bad grade because "it was not in the book".

@marguicha That's because teachers are really nothing but regurgitators. They really don't know what they are talking about. They just regurgitate what they supposedly know based on what others tell them.

@porwest I loved your comment. And I agree I have had some good teachers but they were like good friends. You only need the fingers of one hand to count them

We used to celebrate Columbus Day on October 12, but now Italy does not celebrate it anymore. The guy lost popularity.

Even traditions regarding giving praise to our founding fathers are changing. Our early settlers are now being called 'invaders' by the indigenous people.

In fact, everyone is an invader, depending on how you look at it. Who knows exactly where the first people came from?

It surprises me that other countries celebrate Columbus Day. Here in America is a growing awareness of what Columbus was truly like. On the calendar it says Columbus Day and Indigenous People's Day. Hope you have a great day and hope that it will get warmer soon for you.

Years ago Columbus was important here. Now people want the holiday to go to the beach of have a day of leisure. But Native people are having more importance here. There´s still a long way to go though.

I think so much has been raped and pilfered when it comes to our history due to cancel culture and it is an abomination. We can still celebrate Columbus on a day and just tell the true history, and if we want to have an indigenous people's day, we can do that another day and tell their history too. Who suffers really are the kids who get a fairy tale view of the world in their education but don't get to hear the truth, which is sometimes harsh, but from which there are valuable lessons to be learned as well that can shape and guide the future.

I wholly agree. And history must be put in context too.
