Are you surprised what triggers people?

Recently, I did a discussion that apparently a couple of people took (polite) offense to, which very much surprised me. If you follow me here, you would notice I’m exactly controversial. In America (other countries too), there is a rush of outrage over political correctness, and I think we may have gotten to a point where you just have to accept people are overly sensitive in this day and age. I’m sure on some topics, I can be too. Have you ever touched a sore spot with someone, and despite going over it in your head, you still can’t understand how it offended a person? I’m not talking about a cultural misunderstanding, but you can use that if it is your only experience.

I’ve had people take offense to my constant lighthearted attitude….actually got fired when I was 19 for joking with customers in a convenience store. Some people have complained about southern jokes until I tell them I’m a southerner, too.

What a dumb reason to fire a person.

@AmbiePam — thinking back on it I think it was the manager, not the customers, who didn’t like it. I had a few customers actually ask me WHY I wasn’t joking around. But I was young and dumb. That store is long gone and my sense of humor and I are still here.

The best comedians can poke fun at everyone, including themselves. George Carlin. Richard Pryor. Key and Peele. Chris Rock. An the list goes on.

I try to avoid people who are overly sensitive about correctness, it has gotten ridiculous. My philosophy is live and let live and I won't change what I feel to be correct. I accept that everyone has a right to their opinion even if it doesn't agree with mine.

Political correctness was invented to deprive people of their freedoms.

As an "academic," I get tired of academic types who use political correctness to gain power for themselves and dis-empower others. I could go on, but I have to get to work. I wrote a short story (years ago) about political correctness on college campuses. I think it's pretty funny.

I tend to stay out of political conversation just because for the vast majority it never ends well. There are lots of sore subjects anything and everything has a way of driving the right person over the edge. There are people that can happily agree to disagree on things and that's always a good thing.

Yes. And most of the time they are clearly not listening to what a person has t say, they just hear a single word or phrase, focus on that, and then get worked up about it.

We've become a people who no longer take the time to "listen" to what someone else is saying, instead we are "hearing" for words/phrases that we do not like so we can jump all over them and call them every name under the sun. When I was growing up we were taught to listen, hence I don't get offended easily. That's not to say I don't because I do, I just don't go ballistic and ramp, stomp and snort at the person. When someone disagrees with one of my viewpoints to the point they rant, stomp and snort, it lets me know how shallow that person is. We're all allowed our own viewpoints, that is what makes us different and how we can learn from one another. I really like @LouAvul response If you disagree with me about God, that is okay, but don't throw it up in my face because your mad I don't agree with you on something.

I agree. Listening is becoming a lost art. And I see a lot of people digging their heels in, rather than trying to learn from others.

I had asked someone to get me some chocolates when she returned from the UK and had given her 20 dollars. I expected here to get me something in a sealed box - hard plastic or metal but it was not so and she did not take the money. I did make a mention of it and she got upset. I did not want anything free either

People get offended because it gives them a feeling of power and control over other people. They are offended so we have to change things to appease them. I know someone who is always crying or outraged by something I said in ordinary conversation. I am always unsure of what I said wrong. I go over the conversation in my head and am just baffled. I just can't figure her out or how to talk to her. I always walk on eggshells around her. I finally moved out of there so I don't hurt her anymore.

I hear you and I'm sorry someone took exception to your post. I've always enjoyed your posts and have never found anything controversial about them. Certainly some people are overly sensitive nowadays - at least to my way of thinking.

It occurred to me before. It was a Mylot member I don't see very often anymore. She was rude. I just conveyed my gratitude to the Lord for the blessings. She asked me, "Why do you have to thank the Lord?" Is He in front you? I did not block the person. I just ignored her. I don't read anything she posts. It did, however, make me angry.

I have gotten a few comments like that from Mylotters who seem to resent anyone who believes in God or Jesus. It just shows a vague ugliness in their heart that prompts them to show contempt for someone who believes humans are not the be all and end all. Even if they don’t agree, feeling the need to share their derision is weird and unnecessary when it doesn’t even involve them.

I try to make sure to "tread lightly" here but sometimes despite my best attempts I realize I don't always come across that way. People most certainly are over sensitive about certain topics, but it may not be you, it may be having run across a similar attitude or sentiment they don't agree with in other discussions and it gets to them. For instance there seems to be a fairly strong anti American sentiment on here at times even with Americans and that can get to me, This country may not be perfect, but is well intentioned, and first to help, at least in many circumstances. It is like having a sunburn..it doesn't take much to get it hurting if someone lightly taps your arm.

@AmbiePam Absolutely, and has done so with other countries for many years and will help Israel as well, however in some cases, I do think America sticks their nose in a bit too much. We aren't the policemen of the world...however, in most situations it gets involved in it seems to have a vested interest. Who can fault the govt. really?

Difference of opinion is healthy but it is how we express them and how others take them. Most here take care not to offend and avoid topics that are controversial. I have been following that path here after having to put out a fire that was not of my making but due to others' misinterpretation.

People are so sensitive these days. More than they need to be. I am always SO CAREFUL about what I post here. Yet, I have managed to offend a couple of people over my 4 years here. It was all a matter of one word incorrectly placed or incorrectly "spoken". Have a great weekend.
