Obviously we have different ideas

A friend just called round and brought a colleague from work with her. The colleague had just been to look at a potential place to rent, as they need accommodation for a few weeks, because the flat they were renting was being renovated. It should have been finished by the start of November but everything has been delayed. So basically they just need somewhere to stay for two or three weeks. I mentioned that they could come to us, as we have spare rooms and we have many times talked about possibly getting a lodger but then never done it. But the friend said ‘Oh no it’s OK, he’s going to come to us.’ Considering she lives in a small three-bedroom house I was surprised. It already houses herself, her husband, their four children (two girls, two boys), her cousin and his partner. And since it’s a very modern house the rooms are really quite small. I asked ‘Are you sure you really have enough room?’ And she replied ‘Oh yes, there’s still the kitchen!’ Obviously she (and presumably her colleague as well) have different ideas to mine concerning the need for space. I don’t think I’d want to spend more than a couple of days sleeping in someone’s kitchen, on the seat the children need to sit on to eat their breakfasts (and have often spilled food on!). And with nowhere to put anything, unless he takes a very small bag of clothes that could double as a pillow, in the manner of minimalist camping. I guess it depends on whether free accommodation of any kind is better than your own space. What would you choose? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

That is what they should do.

I'd take your offer... I can manage sleeping on someone's floor but would feel awkward if it was in a high traffic area of the house. And definitely wouldn't be happy with someone coming in when I was trying to sleep to get a midnight snack.

To be honest I would prefer to sleep inside someone's garage than inside a kitchen, this sounds too weird to me.

I know what you mean, at least you would have a bit of space to yourself and you wouldn't feel you were quite so much in the way!

@Fleura This is my opinion. When I visited my mother or my grandmother, we had a "guest room", but I never liked to stay for long. I know that guests are appreciated only for a few days. I had the same experience when I invited friends.

Well, of course, I would be reasonable and take up your offer but perhaps there is some other reason the colleague wants to stay with them,

I wouldn’t take a family with children to such a small place.

How odd... Is that a picture of your house or your friend's? I guess there's always the garage, too.

No, but it's a similar age and style to hers, which is also the end house of a row of three just like these. They do also have a garage but it isn't attached to the house, and it's full of bicycles and such!

I don't like to be in a crowded setting. I need my space.

@Fleura It's uncomfortable having to trip over other people or their things.

Me too. I don't mind a tiny space, as long as I don't have to share it!

@fleura I need as much space as possible, and privacy. Certainly wouldn’t relish sleeping in a kitchen. When I lived in Rotterdam I slept in a large wardrobe. There were three of us who slept in it. We all worked different shifts in the same factory so while one was at work another was in bed/wardrobe and the third one was up and about.
