Ooh, what sweet words….”hard freeze watch.” That means an end to the growing season, and an end to the allergy season!!! Unfortunately, we have to take cold with it, but I’m tired enough of sneezing to bundle up. If you’re tired of songs with “ain’t” in the title, there’s just three left (including today’s), then we can move on to another grammatical nightmare. Here’s today’s obvious tune. #3: Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad - Meat Loaf Of course this was going to be here! What, you think anyone who was a teenager in the 70s is going to ignore this album???? Why did we gravitate to this album? Probably because it wasn’t disco or Debby Boone. But it was — and still is — a great album. This was a refreshing change of pace from what was dominating popular music in 1977. If you think Meat Loaf (ne Marvin Lee Aday) just popped up out of nowhere, that’s not true. He’d been working for years, primarily as a singing actor in plays. In fact, he played Eddie AND Dr. Scott in the play The Rocky Horror Show, but was relegated to just one scene as Eddie in the movie. Let’s face it, Meat wasn’t much to look at. In fact, he looked better once he conquered his addictions than he did at the height of his popularity. So you can’t blame the popularity of this album (over 22 million copies sold since its release) on girls drooling. No, this is a legitimately quality album. This was the lead single from the album, and one you’ll still hear today on “classic rock” radio. And a “six degrees” post script to the sad news of Night Court star Richard Moll’s death this weekend: the woman who sang the duet on “Paradise By the Dashboard Lights” is Ellen Foley, who played the defense attorney in the second season of Night Court. Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad Written by Jim Steinman Recorded by Meat Loaf From Bat Out of Hell, 1977 No Coupe De Ville hiding at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box:

One night at the midnight showing of RHPS, according to the paper, someone actually threw a slice of meat loaf in the scene where Frank N. Furter uncovers the table.

It’s not one I can listen to every day (the way I can something like City to City by Gerry Rafferty), but I think it’s held up quite well over these 46 years. (Ouch, this album is 46 years old????? )

I haven’t heard this one, although I’ve heard several Meat Loaf songs due to MTV (unbeknownst to my parents).

@FourWalls I have never heard the term "bathroom song", but I have to find a way to work it into a conversation now.

Most of the classic rock stations play “Paradise By the Dashboard Lights” because it’s a bathroom song (about 14 minutes long).

You know, Meatloaf was always one of those "weird" guys in music to me, but at the same time still fun to listen to. He didn't have a lot of hits, but the ones he did seem to be holding up well to the test of time.

@FourWalls I would say he had one good album and that would have been Bat Out of Hell. But I agree, beyond that, it just kind of got a bit weird.

Meatloaf was in the 1979 movie Americathon, a "crazy and prescient tale of a future debt-ridden and oil-less America (set in 1998!) facing foreclosure and its President’s tele-appeal to save it."

Meat and Steinman were quite a team. I much prefer Meat Loaf’s version of “Read ‘Em and Weep” to Barry Manilow’s.

He really had a good voice, especially for the songs that Steinman wrote.
