One activity I always enjoyed watching while sitting on the beach were the local surfers. Riding on those waves of water certainly requires some skill, just like the songwriter who can craft a song using water as a title or theme. So, we will be traveling into some uncharted waters while trying to figure out these song selections... Good luck! Comments, musings, your own favorite water titled songs and trivia always welcome... 1. "Don't Go Near the Water"- The Beach Boys -This tune is a departure from those happy "Boys" tunes about cars, surfing and girls. By the early 70's the group became more political in their music themes, and this is one of those songs. They express their sadness over human pollution in "oceans, rivers, lakes and streams," and warn us to stay away from the water. An interesting tune which still has it's wonderful Beach Boy harmonies in it. *What's your favorite Beach Boy song. "Good Vibrations" says it for me! TRIVIA CHALLENGE ***Now for our trivia music challenge for those who like to play along. See if you can guess these selections. Words in "quote marks" provide valuable clues! Name this week's tune, artist or facts: 1. This #1 song released in 1968 was recorded by singer "Otis Redding" who gained the nickname the "King of Soul" for his unique singing style. He died three days after recording this water themed tune about "sittin' on a dock watching the ships coming into shore." The song finishes with the most famous whistling in music history which fits in with this mellow sounding tune. -Do you know the name of this famous Redding song which became a crossover hit for the artist? 2. This Canadian American group at one time was known as the "Hawks." These musicians were the subject of a "Documentary" by famous filmmaker Martin Scorsese called "The Last Waltz." The group was instrumental in popularizing the Country Rock genre, influencing later groups like the Eagles. The group's music experienced a stylistic change when they recorded "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," a song about the Civil War south. Today's water themed song by these musicians mentions a "creek" and a rendezvous with a girl named "Bessie." P.S.- You might have heard of the recent passing of "Robbie Robertson" the guitarist for this group. -Can you name this group and their water song? 3. Bonus: The group in #2's answer became "this artist's backing band" between 1965-1967. The musician's early music was "folk-rock oriented, but later he turned to a more electrified sound which drew controversy among his folk purist's fans. -Do you know the name of this folk artist who's poetic 60's songs about protest and societal injustice made him an icon in the music industry? Ok, make sure not to get "waterlogged" when answering these trivia questions. If you're stuck and need additional hints just let me know in your response. I'll be glad to supply one. Or, as Sam and Dave would say, "Hold on I'm Coming." Thanks for reading and responding to my music post!!! I will return with a new edition in the near future. Hope you can wait till then, lol. Stay tuned... Source- Wikipedia & songfacts.com

Oh wow, I didn't know that about Otis. Too many talents have lost their lives due to air craft. Oh yeah, I didn't even think of Up on Cripple Creek, its a great song.

My favorite Beach Boys song ever has to be “Forever”, no doubt. Is it partly because I first heard it on the sitcom, “Full House” when Jesse (John Stamos) married Rebecca (Lori Laughlin) and he sang that song to her? Could be, but that is the first time I heard it, and I love The Beach Boys version even more. And kudos to those Boys for appearing on that sitcom like three times.

Cool story! Never knew they appeared on that sitcom, nice trivia. I did see Carl Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine when they appeared as guest stars on Tim Allen's Home Improvement.

Yes, they definitely went through an image change for sure! I saw them a couple of times when I was in college. Enjoyable time, although Mike Love was a bit of a jerk. I like Surfer Girl too OT. What's not to like about a girl on a surfboard. Well, nice job on the quiz, you nearly "blew it out of the water." - Up on Cripple Creek was the Band's song. Music Trivia Facts: -The Band's song "The Weight" was used in the Counterculture 1969 film "Easy Rider." Enjoy...
