Where have I put them??

Although each year both the girls get an Advent calendar, we didn’t like the fact that they are mainly packaging, a lot of which is not even recyclable. So two or three years ago both the girls made fabric Advent calendars. They came as pre-printed panels and it was simply necessary to cut out the parts and sew them together in the appropriate places. The results are really nice re-usable calendars which could last for generations. The snag is that of course we then need to get things to go in the little pockets, so overall even though we are not paying for all that unnecessary packaging, they work out more expensive than the pre-packed little chocolate shapes. Well, a few days ago I went to the supermarket Lidl. They sell our favourite Christmas goodies, chocolate-coated lebkuchen. I don’t like starting Christmassy things too early, but unfortunately they start selling them in October or even earlier and run out long before Christmas, so I have learned that I need to stock up when I see them. They had quite a selection of Christmas-related treats in stock, and I looked up and down the aisles but couldn’t find lebkuchen. Eventually I did find a few packs in a basket, so I bought several in case those really were all they had left! Anyway, to get to the key point of this post, while I was looking for those I came across several packs of little treats that could be used to pop in the pockets of the Advent calendars, so I bought a selection. And when I got home I realised I had better put them out of sight somewhere before the girls saw them. The first place I thought of that they would never look was inside the washing machine. But then I found that my partner had put some dirty clothes in there, so I decided I’d better find somewhere else. And the weird thing is that at that point my memory goes blank. So where DID I put them?? I have looked all over and not found them yet! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

@fleura Maybe you did put them in the washing machine even though you had already ruled that option out.

I thought of that - after I had already started the washing cycle!! Thankfully that was not the case - phew!

Oh dear, you might have early onset dementia. Just be glad you didn’t given them to me. I’d have eaten them or hidden them somewhere, where I too couldn’t remember where they were. Did you not put them directly into the advent calendar? It would have saved you a job later and makes sense to me. Not that that means a lot.

@Fleura 30 years ago? You must have been a mere slip of a lass! I’ve always had a great memory for certain things, like facts and trivia, but often let down on important things like peoples names or ‘have I locked the door?’

@Orson_Kart I have always had a rubbish memory, unfortunately. It really is the bane of my life. My career would have been very different if only I could remember the important details!

I do worry about that - except I know that I am not as scatterbrained as I used to be about 30 years ago when I was constantly mislaying my house keys and all that sort of thing.

I've found that in our new house there really are less places where something can go missing. I managed to empty a display cabinet the other day and it's moved house so that's one less place to look. I have to remember my own advice when Vince can't find something which is 'Did you look BEHIND this, that or the other'. If it's paperwork that missing, I remind him to look UNDER other pieces of paper. I hope you find them before Christmas. You've got 50+ days left!

I did actually find them in the end. I had put them inside our non-functional fridge (which reminds me, I must arrange to get that taken away!)

I am forever doing that. Mostly I find them, but sometimes they stay hidden for months!

I did that once, I bought a gift for my then boyfriend for Christmas and hid it so carefully that in the end I had to give it him for his birthday in July!

@Ronrybs Oh yes getting a replacement is the best way to guarantee you will find the old one!

@Fleura I once put a book away and couldn't find it. I ended up buying another copy and a few years later I find the original. I did something similar with a Kindle and after buying a few one, found the old one a few months later

Ya didn't put them in the trash didja? A friend of mine told how her partner had put the rent money cash in the garbage for "safe keeping" but didn't tell her, and she of course, took out the trash, never to be found again.

That was a really good idea; and the fabric Advent calendar looks really nice. I hate when I'm thinking of something else and I can't remember where I put something. I hope you find them. Have a wonderful day.

Thanks. The calendars came pre-printed from a local sewing shop and there were a variety of patterns.
