Squirrel stew

So as I said I bought a couple of oven-ready squirrels to try. I had read that there isn’t much meat on a squirrel apart from the haunches, so I was a little bit surprised to find almost a whole squirrel in there (minus the head). Never tried cooking squirrel before so I decided to put them in the slow cooker with plenty of vegetables. The result was a tasty stew, which was enough to make a meal for the four of us two nights running, with a little bit left over. The slow cooking meant that the meat easily came off the bones, but of course we had to keep picking little bones out. Funnily enough although Little One normally makes a fuss if she finds a single bone in a piece of fish (and you can guarantee that if there is one bone in a meal of fish fillets, she will be the one to find it!) she didn’t complain about these but said it was like an anatomy lesson, as we picked out tiny ribs, shoulder blades, vertebrae etc. As far as the flavour was concerned, it wasn’t like anything else I have eaten and the first night I was convinced that I wouldn’t buy it again, although the others seemed to like it well enough. By the second night though it had mellowed somehow and I liked it better. I would try it again if I come across anywhere selling any. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

Your stew looks wonderful . . . but squirrel - I just can't! Would you describe it as "earthy"?

@Fleura I wonder if that is due to them eating so many nuts . Nutty . . . that is quite different!

Thanks. I really don't know how to describe it, it wasn't like anything else. Maybe it was nutty?

@much2say I'm sure the animal's diet must have some effect.

@Fleura - Well, not all of them, but some are so tiny, frail and cute, I cannot arrive to eat them.

I like your willingness to try it! I remember watching an episode of the now canceled reality show, Duck Dynasty, and the matriarch got a squirrel her husband had brought in out of the freezer. He had also skinned it, and it was the weirdest feeling, looking at a squirrel, whole except for the skin and fur. She said squirrel brains were her favorite delicacy, but I don’t know if I’d go for the brains, even if they were included. But hey, they weren’t wasteful people! Your picture looks really tasty!

I had never heard of Duck Dynasty! I'm not sure about eating brains, especially after the whole mad cow disease episode, although I know lambs' brains used to be commonly eaten. Little One fished out something lumpy from her stew and we decided it must be the heart. She drew the line at eating that so I had to eat it instead!

I just did a bit of a search and soon found that squirrel is the traditional basis of Brunswick stew

@Fleura My parents liked it fried. Mom breaded it like she did chicken. I often boil it down then make chicken and noodles

I'm glad you liked it and Little One did too with all the bones.

Your stew looks good; but I think I would pass on the squirrel. Have a great weekend.

Mom never made stew out of the squirrels but I'm sure it turned out well. Your photo looks delicious.

I just did it because it seemed the easiest option, but a brief search now has revealed that Brunswick stew is traditionally made with squirrel

Mike had had squirrel brains before. Not me. He is much more of an adventurous eater than I. I think I would have to be very hungry before I could eat a squirrel. Your post gives me hope that I could do it if need be.

If it was nicely presented I'm sure you could eat it, even if you were not starving.
