Did You Ever Wonder Why........? Yet Again

I didn't really wonder why there were so many different shapes of pasta. Nor did I wonder why school buses are yellow. Or why do we say 'cheese' before taking a picture? I found those to be rather obvious but why there are 13 in a baker's dozen seems more interesting to me. Those bakers in medieval England are the ones that are thought to have come up with the idea of tossing in an extra loaf or rolling in to be sure that their customers were happy. Eggs are usually the same size and easy to figure while baked goods may come out in different sizes. This is usually dependent on how well the dough rises. Since many bakers didn't have accurate scales and did not want to be accused of cheating (which could result in such punishments as flogging) bakers would include 13, sometimes even 14 to be sure nobody complained.

The pasta is one that fascinated me until I started cooking. Have you ever tried to stuff a noodle? Also it's much easier to string certain pastas into a necklace than others. Plus the shorter pastas are easier to make mac and cheese with and aren't quite as messy as longer pastas.
School buses are easier to see in among trees and shrubs and in the fog if they are yellow. Plus the manufacturers had an excess of yellow paint so why not use it on school buses? Shoot, kids would love to go to school on a red bus or a blue one.
Saying "Cheese" loosens the face muscles and makes you look like you have an easy smile rather than a forced one. Even the most sour person will look somewhat pleasant if they are saying cheese. Of course if the mice hear "Cheese" they may flock to where the picture is being taken and there may be utter caos with the people that are afraid of mice. Plus every cat in the area will come running for the chance to catch a mouse.
Another thought for the baker's dozen, it could also be the fact that the bakers weren't too good and it was easier to get rid of the excess by giving away an extra pastry to the person than tossing it out after closing. Plus the customer will discover that they got an extra and will come back.
Hummm, I have a bossy Siamese stomping back and forth across my computer, I think it's a serious hint that I need to settle down a bit before I head for the bedroom. She's busily loving my finger and rearranging the computer screen. UHHHH it's a definite "Get the hint STUPID" hint from a very bossy cat! So it's good night until tomorrow. Freya adds her "YEOW, purrrrr" which is cat for good night.

I don't care for pasta except for the elbow type that I make goulash with and, one I make tuna salad with. Yes, I know the reasoning behind the saying of "cheese" so didn't feel like going into it. The Baker Dozen theory could very well be true.
Siamese are so naughty. I had one that had laser-like claws and she would jump on me in summer when I only had a sheet over me. OUCH!

Yeah, a dozen eggs. They don't do a baker's dozen with eggs.

@celticeagle No, but they came up with 18 eggs. I wondered about that. You'd have to pay the chickens over time to have them lay that many eggs!

If I were the baker and planning to bump someone off, I would be the lucky soul that would get the one with the poison in it to sample.

Interesting musing. I asked a waitress how many breaded shrimp would arrive if I ordered a meal. She said at least six- the cook measured out 7 ounces and whatever fit into 7 ounces, that is what was on my plate. Eggs do come in not as regular shapes sometimes but the folks who sell the eggs weed those out- I hope to bakeries and such and not to a dumpster.

Humm, I keep waiting to see a square egg in a shell. It would be so much fun to see one. But it would be a real pain in the laying section of the chicken because of the corners.
Forgive me, I'm feeling a bit frisky as it's almost time to crawl in bed.

Most of the eggs that don't come in the "regular" shapes don't make it into the dumpster, they make it into the food banks and other resources for the financially challenged that need help with their food. Depending on the size of the family they receive between a half dozen eggs and up. That happens with a lot of the food from the grocery stores too. Stuff that is reaching the "sell by" date finds its way to food banks and agencies that cook for the homeless. It is heart warming to know that the food isn't just being destroyed unnecessarily.

I wonder why you would wonder why...
I think the baker's dozen came about from the buyer eating one on the way home and then complaining they only got 11...
