Iowa Losers Are Still Winners

I often wonder, does the lottery ever "get it wrong?" Well. Yes. They do. Granted, it's rare and there are tons of checks and balances to avoid it. But humans are still at the helm and that means sometimes mistakes will be made. That's what happened in Iowa with their reporting of the Powerball numbers, which were the wrong numbers. For roughly 7 1/2 hours the wrong numbers were indicated and many "winners" with prizes up to $200 went and claimed their winnings at various locations. But they weren't winners. Nonetheless, Iowa decided to allow the "mistaken winners" to keep their winnings anyway. I do wonder, though, what would have happened if someone there had thought they won the jackpot or the 5 number million? I am sure they would not have been paid. And what a nightmare to realize at midnight you were a millionaire and at 8 am realize it was a mistake. Ouch.

I heard about this. I'm glad they let the winners keep their money. Is that Dawn? (Do I have her name right?) That's a good picture. You two have a great weekend.

@porwest I'm surprised you got away with taking a picture! We sneaked one in Caesar's Palace.

Yep. That's wifey. Dawn. I believe that picture was taken when we stopped at whichever casino is in or near Metropolis, Illinois when we were spending some time in Paducah, Kentucy for our anniversary a couple of years ago. Or maybe it was last year. Hell, I don't know. lol

Never heard of that happening to a lottery, but I bet it made them gee up their procedures. I suspect they felt they had to pay out or people might stop playing the game

@porwest I suppose most people check their numbers with the official site or from broadcast news, who also go to the official site.

@Ronrybs I always check them that way, mostly online. If I ever "win" I will definitely make SURE before I have egg on my face or get too excited. lol. THAT would be my luck to finally win and not actually win.

It can definitely create a problem. When it comes to the multi-state lotteries, at least you can check several sites to make sure the numbers are right.

Yeah. Kind of wild. I would have thought they would have said the winners would have to give the money back. I am glad to see they did not do that. Perhaps they took the money out of the unclaimed prize pool? Who knows? Of course, I also think it may have been REALLY bad marketing to NOT let the winners keep their money even if they did not actually win. This sort of reminds of that old Community Chest card, "Bank error occurred in your favor." lol

Generosity only goes so far doesn't it. Especially when most states are hurting from economic inflation. Hundreds ok, millions... no way!

Yeah, I am pretty sure if someone had "accidentally" won the jackpot they'd have apologized for their error and not coughed up the dough.

That was a serious mistake. I cannot imagine what would happen if the number for the first prize was wrongly reported.

That was my curiosity. I mean, a couple hundred bucks is one thing. But it if you thought you won the jackpot and didn't, that would be devastating.
