Solar panels which follow the course of the sun

At this house-sit, they have a bank of solar panels which supply some, if not all, of their power. Australia is ideally suited to harness the power of the sun as we have so many sunny days. I’ve taken two photos of the solar panels, both from basically the same spot. This particular set-up is designed to follow the path of the sun over the course of the day. The upper photo shows the panels facing east to catch the morning sun. They automatically swivel to follow the sun as it moves overhead. In the lower photo, the panels are facing west to catch the last of sun’s rays. What you see in the lower photo is the back of the panels.

I have seen those panels here, they are used for the street lights, that is a good idea in my opinion. They have shaped ours to look like flowers that follow the sun.

@JudyEv They not only turn, but during the night the "flower" folds all its petals.

That's nice. It can harness the maximum solar energy in the day. India too has started adopting solar energy in the recent years. It's very much encouraged by the current government. Solar panels have picked up a lot of popularity and use in the recent years.

@JudyEv Yes, it has. We have long summer here with plenty of sunlight. Except for few weeks in monsoon and winter, we get good sunlight throughout the year. Solar energy has a promising future here.

@arunima25 Once the price of batteries come down so the energy can be stored more cost-effectively, it will be even better.

Oh how I miss sunny Australia. I think sun following solar panels are pretty neat.

Wow, that's truly awesome, I wonder why no one has thought to do that here.

I think it's more likely that our general utility companies prefer to make a lot of money

That's good in Australia. It would not fly in Ohio. We have a lot of cloudy days in the fall and winter. Have a good weekend.

I can understand that solar power wouldn't work everywhere.

It's nice that the panels will follow the sun. Use of solar panels are not that common here.

I guess it's only of use if there is a lot of sun. They also take quite a bit of room although most domestic houses have the panels mounted on the roof.

@JudyEv Yes, HK is a compact city packed with high rise buildings. Only those in New Territories use solar panels.

It's becoming quite commonplace now for farmers to use solar to run pumps or to power electric fences, etc.

Once, simple solar panels were considered marvellous but now they are used in so many ways. The farm here has a small panel at the end of a fence which powers the electric fence and there is another slightly larger one that runs a pump.

Yes, the panels get the maximum benefit from the sun that way.

There are some houses around here which use solar panels. We thought about it but haven't checked into yet.

Even in winter we have a lot of sun so it's quite a good solution for Australians.
