My new project

I’ve started a new project – and almost finished it. We’ve had several trips to Ireland and Europe and I always save the little toilet bags that you’re given on the plane. They usually hold a tiny toothbrush and paste, perhaps bed socks and an eye mask. Although I save them, I haven’t really found much use for them so now I’m crocheting pretty covers for them and I might use them as emergency gifts or I might just donate them. The wool I’m using consists of about five different colours but it’s not as pretty as I might have liked. I still have to work out how to stitch the cover nicely to the bag.

I bet somewhere like a women's shelter would love to have things like that..or a group home or something. Anything that reminds them there are good people in the world would be nice.

I hadn't thought about women's shelters but that's a really good idea.

@JudyEv I like what you have done and it has been so long since I flew on a plane that I do not remember the bags and maybe I never got one that I do not remember them.

@Hannihar I wish we had done more travelling when we were younger but now long distances of travel are more like hard work than fun. I'd prefer to stay home now.

Most of our trips are long ones. I don't think they give them out on shorter trips.

@JudyEv Do you enjoy traveling a lot? Some do and some do not. Some have to do trips and others would prefer to stay put. Which one are you?

I might put beads or glitter on some to liven them up a bit.

How long does it take to make one cover?

I could get one done in an evening if I had to but mostly I take my time over a day or two.

I think that it is a great idea to pretty those little bags up. You could leave a couple of them in the homes of the people that you house sit for, so that they can use them on their next trip.

@JudyEv I agree donating them to shelters is a great idea, or a young mother-to-be class for the underprivileged might be a good suggestion.

This is a great idea Judy. I also have plenty of those toilet bags, from our many trips to the United States and back.

They are nice little bags but not really much use for much. I can find uses for one or two but not for many more than that.

I have had quite a few of those over the years & used to save them & give them to patients on the wards who needed them. .

That's a really good way to jazz them up and turn them into something useful and not just more 'disposable' plastic.

Did you do the white stitching on the plastic pouch? You can slip stitch the crocheted cover to that.

I did the white chain stitch round the top for that purpose but I'm thinking I'll take it out and stitch it with the same colour thread as the last round of crochet.

I think those are lovely. I also admire your talent. We're still thinking about a trip to Scotland in a few years AND shrinking from the thought of being squished into plane seats for basically a day.
