Countries are Scrapping Passports

January 11, 2024 4:25am CST
Singapore was the first country to abolish passports for travellers, but a number of African countries, including Namibia have also done the same. Will a passport-less travel make things easier to travel around the world? There are countries fighting excess immigration today and they will probably not allow a passport-less travel

@ogbenishyna I love my passport. I would hate to not get to brandish it when arriving somewhere.

We are European and we do not need a passport to travel through the European countries. But we need a passport if we want to visit countries outside Europe. Anyway to be clear about the "NO Passport". Travelers will still need to have a passport, they will not need to show it at the gate as facial recognition technology will match their identity to the passport information they have entered when applying for the Electronic Travel Authorization. People must know the full story before thinking that we can go everywhere without showing documents NO, WE NEED A PASSPORT.

I have never gone to another country and I don't have a passport, if we go to Singapore of course we only need a passport (except you are staying there for a long time, you might need a VISA too).

Very controversial - And it seems I won't be able to get into Singapore without My South African Passport - so I wonder what system they will use for their subjects to get into My Country without a passport?

Well, I guess South Africa may have to implement passport-less policy too. I hope New Zealand has restored visa-free travel to South Africa.

I couldn't understand that. We went to Singapore in 2016 and we needed our passport and visa to go there. I am not aware of such development. Is it recent one?

Yes it is a recent development but I doubt if it is for everyone.

@ogbenishyna Oh! I see. Sounds quite interesting as no country does it these days with respect to security concerns. Yes, some passports are strong and don't need visa. Some countries are given visa on arrival. But scrapping the need of passport for travel is something weird.

It seems like a thoughtful move on the part of a sovereign nation to abolish the passport requirement for its citizens who are traveling. While passports can be difficult to carry with you on trips, especially if you misplace yours and have to pay for a replacement, they can also serve as a useful form of identification when you are abroad. If you find yourself in trouble abroad, you can always contact your embassy for assistance.

You are correct. We may still need passports in some situations.

We were in Namibia six months ago and still had to show passports (RSA Citizens). I know Namibia abolished passports for visitors from Botswana, but they still have to show ID. I think with digital ID's, we will probably see fewer paper passports in future.
