Why my 3D jigsaw is proving so difficult

I’ve written about a 3D hedgehog jigsaw that I’m attempting to do. I don’t think I’m going to be able to do it. The photo shows the instruction sheet, such as it is. The ones that look like little hair-combs are the ‘prickles’ of the hedgehog. All the rest are hard, clear plastic pieces. You might be able to see that the shapes are all quite different, but mostly in small ways. I’ve drawn around each piece on paper and numbered them to be sure I pick up the correct piece. I’ve done something similar with the prickles as they have from four to eight spikes. Some of the spikes are a mix of long and short so I’ve been careful to sort them out accurately too. You’re supposed to work your way through from number 1 to the end. So far, I’m managed to get to number 9 but I can’t make the next parts fit. I'll try again later.

Oh my goodness, this seems a lot more difficult than I thought. The shapes are quite different, but small and small differences also. The best should be to sort the pieces in the same order as the instructions sheet and then to start.

@JudyEv If the letters are missing this is becoming a very hard task to accomplish.

That's more or less what I've done. I drawn round the piece and put the number on it. The quill pieces are supposed to have a letter on them but I can't see it. That's why I had the magnifying glass out.

@LadyDuck I have counted the spines on each piece and matched them up with the numbers on the sheet. The quills have numbers as well as letters.

Wow! That sounds challenging. I might enjoy something like that or maybe it might drive me crazy. Have a good day.

@LindaOHio I've made so little progress that it isn't a lot of fun yet.

I bet the instructions are clearer in Chinese.

That looks difficult. I think I just enjoy doing the ordinary jigsaws.

Yeah, that instruction sheet is clear as mud. Did it come from IKEA? (she asked snarkily) And what are the letters about?

The quill pieces are supposed to have their letters printed on them but even with a magnifying glass I can't see them. I've matched them with the numbers by counting the number of prickles on each.

I wonder if you can get some help from some other puzzlers on this. Some may welcome the challenge.

I had no charger for nearly a week so didn't post anything. I still haven't done the hedgehog jigsaw. I really don't think I'll be able to do it but I'll try again one day.

I got a headache just looking at the instructions! I think I’ll stick to the 2D jigsaw puzzle app on my tablet.

What would irritate me is having the puzzle laid out and a child walks in and puts it together without any instructions or help. I have jigsaw puzzles on my computer that I do, and I don't pay a lot of attention to colors or stuff like that, I just watch the piece shapes and am able to put the puzzle together in no time flat. It also drives the other tenants nuts that I can do the puzzles so quickly. One thing about doing the puzzle, clear your mind and don't put a time limit on finishing the puzzle and also don't tell yourself that you won't be able to do it. It's like when I made my first teddy bear. I was sure I couldn't do it and that it would turn out awful. Now, all these years later, I not only make teddy bears, but I also design them. I have won lots of awards with my bears and other stuffed animals and have made money for various charitable organizations with my donating my creations. Just give yourself time and have faith in yourself. If you can't get pieces in place the day you're working on it, tomorrow is another day. If you only get one in place, it's one closer to finishing the puzzle. Just don't totally give up on yourself.

Thanks for the encouragement and positivity. I know you've done incredibly well with your bears. I just keep going back to it from time to time and hopefully, I'll get there eventually.

This looks like LEGO crossed with LSD. Give it a rest for a few days, mulling it over before going to sleep. Your subconscious might be able to work it out

The pieces themselves are 3 dimensional, not just flat. And I wish I had something a bit more important to do too! I might need to find a charity to work for. lol
