Did You Know This About Cashew Shells?

Did you ever wonder why cashews are never available in the shell? Cashews are a member of the poison ivy family. Part of the cashew plant contains an oily chemical which is called urushiol. It can be fatal if ingested. The irritating part is found in the shell but not in the nut. So, to ensure safety, cashew seeds must undergo a high-temperature roasting process to eliminate the urushiol oil before they are available for consumption.

That's interesting to know. I love cashews but didn't have any idea that the shell was lethal.

Thanks for sharing this information.
A lot goes into processing Cashews before they reach us.
Perhaps that is what makes their price at a little premium.
