Two funny CPR clips you might enjoy

The last discussion was long enough anyway but I forgot to mention two video clips that we were shown. Our presenter was a great comedian but imparted a lot of knowledge in among the banter. There are many demonstrations of CPR online but our presenter likes this one put out by the BBC. If you enjoy this clip, you might also like a similar one aimed at school children. Just type ‘mini vinnie cpr’ into the search bar and it should come up. One thing we didn’t know was that, for the first 15 minutes, it’s enough to do compressions without worrying about breathing into the patient. Once past 15 minutes, you do 30 compressions then breathe twice into the patient. Compressing the chest to a particular song helps maintain a regular beat. On the clip, Stayin’ Alive is used but there are other suitable ones. And singing ‘Row Row Row You Boat Twice will give you 30 compressions. The photo shows some of our residents practising giving compressions.

That was funny but it got the point across very well. I hope neither of us will ever have to use this on anyone

I liked the bit where he said 'Here's one I made previously'.

@rebelann It's when the 'body' slides across the floor and he stops it with his foot. The 'one I made previously' line often turns up in cooking shows.

Wow, it's amazing how much it has changed since I was a kid. Growing up it was two breaths and fifteen compressions.

@JudyEv One thing that hasn't changed is the need for the ABC's of medicine. (Airway, breathing and circulation) I think science thinks those fifteen extra compressions will circulate oxygen into the blood and brain better than half the ammount.

And now it's 30 compressions and two breaths. It's funny how these things change. I mean - what is different about unconscious people back then and now that we need to do things differently.

I had to take CPR every year when I was working in mental health. I would feel comfortable doing it if the need arose. Not sure I feel the same about rescue breaths..although I am probably proficient a bit of trivia Michael Jackson's song Smooth Criminal was based on tthe rescue doll Annie .That is who he refers to in "Annie, are you OK?"

I didn't know that about Michael Jackson. Let's hope we never have to use what we know.

That’s the way the American Red Cross teaches it, too…pump to “Stayin’ Alive.”

I like the bit in the clip where they slide in an unconscious person and Vinnie Jones says 'Here's one I made before' which is a standard line in all the cooking shows - just in case you didn't know that. lol

It is the same way they teach here how to perform CPR. I fear I would go into panic should my husband need my help.

It would be very distressing but I feel happier about it now. Hopefully I'd go into automatic mode to a degree and be able to help.

I am a CPR and AED instructor, so it’s always imperative to find ways to keep the class members engaged while going through the training. Humor is one way that most people enjoy. I have seen both of the videos you mentioned, and they are hilarious. Do you want to know something crazy? One time, in the middle of teaching a CPR class, one of the participants went into cardiac arrest. Talk about lucky, she couldn’t have been in a better place to receive help!

@JudyEv She was certainly lucky to be where she was. She got the right care at the right time and survived. I believe she is still alive today; or at least she was when I checked last year.

Oh wow! You would have been able to say 'Here's one I prepared earlier' but I realise it wouldn't have been a funny situation at the time. She was certainly where she needed to be.

It's very useful to know about it although we all hope we never have to use it. We're all old here and one lady knelt down to have a go and immediately got a cramp in her thigh. (I realise it wasn't funny but we all laughed. There but for the grace of God etc)

I remember watching Vinnie Jones doing this on the Beeb. People seem to retain more when it is presented in a light hearted way
