And the list of things I need to learn - thanks to technological progress

1. Printing ..oh this is old. I did plenty of printing when in office. But...the connections in our home are so brilliant thanks to my 90 year old father that I feel terribly outdated. 2. Learn how to call Ola or Uber. I have been using cell phones for the last 20 years, but I still don't know how to call those services. Why? First I was driving. Then I stopped because of an accident, but started calling drivers. Dad cannot wait for Ola and Uber, so drivers have to be called. Do I sound like I am making an excuse? I feel I am. 3. Learn to pay through Unified Payment Interfaces without being fleeced. The whole world around me has learned that, except I. If you call me stupid, you would be an honest friend. 4. Payment of all those electricity, water bills, property taxes, income tax, etc. So...that is the agenda for 2024. What are you planning to learn in 2024, and do you find yourself left behind by technology like me?

@vandana7 You have a point. I was also thinking of using chopsticks when eating. In this way, I can eat slowly as usual.

DE has a flair for technology. Some people are tech savvy. I am not. I need to learn.

I never used Uber and never heard of Ola, when I needed to call a taxi, I got my phone, dialed the number and told them where to come to catch us. I have no idea what Unified Payment Interfaces is/are. To pay bills, I log into my Bank account, perform a first login with password, I receive a code to my smartphone and I do what I need to do. I am planning to learn to use better my smartphone.

I used a similar system. But of late, there is a single driver whom I engage. The reason is, I might need help at some hospitals. I could leave him with keys and take dad into hospital, so that he can park the vehicle come to the lobby and be with dad while I go from one counter to another paying whatever it is, for consultation tests, etc. He would be carrying those documents, water bottles, etc. In case Dad needs admission, he could help too. But this is expensive way to do things. That is why Uber and Ola. Unified Payment Interfaces maybe Indian thing. We have mobile applications. We login with login password, and it is linked upfront to one of our accounts. Then we login, feed in the amount, do QR scan...no cash, no debit card, no credit card. I believe online payments can be done too. But QRCodes reduce the possibility of some errors.

@vandana7 For that we had special services here. He calls a number and they send someone with a comfortable car to bring the person to the hospital and they take care of everything. I refuse to use my smartphone and a QR Code, too many scams!

@LadyDuck QR codes are those of vendors...not ours. It is vendor's responsibility because the app reads out the amount loud and shows the payment is successful, which can be shown to the vendor, before leaving the shop.

I hope you learn everything you need to, and it becomes second nature to you. I can't say I have nothing to learn, but the only thing coming to mind is patience. I'm an impatient person. Waiting for anything is hard for me. Being without a car will help me learn patience.

That makes two of us. Of late, I am giving god the charge. Whenever I am likely to blow my top, if I know the issue in advance, I tell god, please come and sit on my tongue. Anything I say or do today would be as you want it to be. Am I sounding weird? Don't tell anybody though. I am impatient...terribly impatient...and have nasty tongue...foul language. Are you without a car?

@vandana7 No, you don't sound weird. I'm glad you did that. Yes. My car was no longer running, so I donated it to an organization that will fix it and then resell it. I don't know if I'm going to get another.

I love technology and keep updating my skills. My elder son helps me and I learn through trial and error.

I still have to learn a lot about technology. I would be out of connection if my tv or computer will be having problems or disconnected. My hubby does all the technical problem at home.

We become so dependent on men, wonder why. Even to check balances, I ask dad. Now I need to learn it, and practice it, and do it on regular basis else, I will be like fish out of water. I kinda left it for dad, thinking he will feel less dispensable. But now it is time I think to start learning before my cells to learn stop functioning.

@thelme55 These are things which if we don't learn from trusted folks, we can be duped, and duped badly. So actually, we have no choice.

@vandana7 I agree. We need to learn it for ourselves just in case no one can help us.

I don't know how to call Uber but I still drive. Don't know what unified payment is. The bills are easy to pay. Send a check or pay online

Soon those systems may disappear out here. I mean, I hardly find people using checks these days. UPI or Unified Payment system is basically ...an app that needs to be installed in cell phone. It then needs to be linked to any of your accounts. It is ready to go. Whenever we buy things, we login into the UPI using login in password. Then we use the password to pay the amount. The amount is released to the party based on the QR Code that we scan. Theoretically, I understand. Practically, no. :)

I have never used Uber and never even heard of Ola. I'm sure it's easy to do if you want to. I don't know what Unified Payment Interfaces even means! Is that an Indian thing? Payment of bills - do you mean paying them online? I can manage that. Or do you mean just being able to pay them, full stop? That's a whole different problem.

Unified Payment Interface ...they have this payment system. We don't have to carry cash or credit card or debit card. There are apps. We download them on our cell phones. We link them to bank accounts. Then have 2 passwords. One to enter the app, and another for transaction. There is QR code...which when scanned confirms the payment. Theoretically that much. Practically ...gotta try. LOL Online payment is not a big deal for me...though ...standard sites and codes I need to get familiar with. For example cell phone recharge, income tax (here we have codes for various form of taxes), property taxes, water charges, etc.

The things you've listed apply to me too. it all seems more complicated now. Technology hasn't made things easier for me.

I have to start as of yesterday. LOL. This morning I enlisted the help of one of the members in the building. He said he would help me. I need to find time, and so does he. I hope we can start tomorrow.

I can't keep up with all the modern technology. I just use what I know and forget about the rest. Have a good day.

I have listed the things up. Primarily to ensure that I am on track of learning. I guess I will cover most of the ground before the end of this year. But it is imperative that I learn and stop being helpless. I hope you can find somebody who is trustworthy enough to help you with all these. Your husband's cousin might be a good person for this.

Yes of course. To be tech savvy you need to deal with technology for hours on end. Who has the time? Especially if you are a home maker or a professional or a working mother? As for me, I have downloaded Duolingo. Planning to learn a new language.
