He changed his mind.

Men can be so stuborn. After he'd been outside a few minutes, George's nose stopped bleeding. Needless to say, he changed his mind and refused to go. However, it kind of worked out, because we learned our van's battery needs some serious recharging. Our neighbor has a jump box, and was able to start it and pull it out at least. He said he'd come back after a bit and put it back in for us. George got behind the wheel, and he couldn't figure a lot out. Getting him back behind the wheel might be a lot harder than we thought.

It will take time. He will get back to driving eventually. Hope he doesnt get discouraged when he has trouble doing things.

He does sometimes, but I don't think he will in this case. He just needs to use his right arm more.

@Happy2BeMe Currently, no. He's been discharged from home health, and the doctor is playing catch up. She's ordered a chest CT which I'll be taking him to on Friday.

I am glad to know the bleeding stopped. I would be very careful about the driving part. You might have to face the fact that George might never drive again and unless you both are absolutely sure things can turn around it is not worth taking a risk. One thing you might consider is someone who could help you and take him to an open space where he can practice his driving,

I trust George and what he can and can't do. I am encouraged by the fact he's willing to try. It's not like he can't, he just hasn't in months and needs to remind himself how things work. He still knows deep down inside how to, and was reveing the engine to help charge the battery while it was running today. His biggest problem, is that he wants to use his left hand for everything. The gear shift is on his right side. It's going to take time, The last thing we want to do, is tell him what he can and can't do. That's no good for his mental health. He feels like he can get to the point that he can drive again. Which shows a will to live and move forward.

@RasmaSandra The thing with strokes, is some things that used to be so easy, can be overwhelming at first. Because you now have to think about things that used to be second nature. He can do the important thing, use the peddles.

good to keep him out of the driver's seat for a few more months. Here, Bob had to pass a driving class and test by the OT before he could drive after his stroke.

I'm letting George decide what he's most comfortable doing. He knows best, what he is and isn't ready to do. We'll talk to his doctor about what he needs to do to drive again. But, it'll be his choice when (after that) before he gets behind the wheel. I am still encouraging things he can legally do. That will help him with confidence when that time comes, such as starting the van. If he wants to wipe the dust down, that's not going to kill anyone. Just little things and baby steps. Currently he's not being seen by a therapist of any kind. And, our next step in the process is out patient if continued therapy is recommended. And, that will require us leaving the house for it. Idealy, he should be driving for that. But, the VA is so far behind, I'm not sure where we'll be in the process.

I hope he’s not to hard on himself for that. It makes sense that would take a bit to come back.

I don't think he is. He does seem afraid to move his right arm. He did get my backpack out of the van though. I surprised myself and put my chair in and out.

It's not going to be an easy road. We just need to practice.

No. We're working on that. But, his liceince is still active and he doesn't have any restrictions on it. However, while we're waiting on that, he can still refamilirize himself with our van. It'll help him when he's cleared to drive.

@porwest Yeah. I'd be more concerned if he wanted to drive. Although he does occasionally say it'll be easier when he's driving again.

I'm glad the bleeding stopped, and you didn't need to go to the ER. I'm sorry the battery needed charging. I'm glad he wants to get behind the wheel. That's an improvement even though he couldn't figure it out. He's doing well.

I'm glad George's nose stopped bleeding. Everything takes time. A day at a time..step by step. My husband is having PT to be able to sit up in bed. He's very weak. Standing is a ways off yet. Have a good day.

That's why I was encouraged with the fact that George sat in the van with me.
