A delightful moment at Guitar Center today!

After my lessons were done, I was bantering with my last student, an ADHD 16-year-old. He is a quick learner (what is it with these kids who are called "special needs"?) who really enjoys music. I wished him happy Pi Day. (It's still 3/14 here). His mom was next to him. He asked me: what is Pi? I explained that Pi is 3.14, the number you use to generate the circumference of a circle if you know its diameter. We bantered a bit more, and I finally said, Pi is not really just 3.14, it's 3.141592654. At that point, one of our younger salesmen came over and said, "No, pi is...." He rattled it off for thirty digits. Before he was done I said "Nerd! Nerd!" and moved toward him with my fist held high. We fist bumped successfully (white boys sometimes mess up fist bumps) and everyone was laughing. He went back to his station, my student and his mom left, both laughing, and I picked up my guitar and headed home. Happy Pi Day!

Write PIE on a piece of paper and hold it up to a mirror. 3.14! Kind of.

@TheHorse No, but I wasn't looking for any. I had a doctor's appointment this morning and needed to keep my calories down as much as possible.

Gee, if it had been me I would have brought a "PIE" to class. And as for fist bumps, I go for the hugs right off. Of course you had to have a PIE because they come in a circular pan which would be figured with the PI of 3.141592654.... I would have gone for either a cherry pie or a chocolate cream pie.

I'm male, so I only hug people when they hug me first. Heh. Once, at the college, a women of about 20 hugged me when I told she was going to pass our Research Methods class (a hard class). We were having our "last day of class party." I said, "Oh God. I am SO fired!" (I didn't get fired.) Everyone around us laughed. I do a lot of fist bumps with the kids at Guitar Center.

Kids identified with learning disabities (LD) often just learn differently (LD) but they do learn. May I "politically correct" you? He is NOT an ADHD student, he is a student who has ADHD. Person centric labelling. Learned that in a training. Person first, label second. Music and math are said to be processed in the same part of the brain so this person who is learning music may also be a quick learner for math. Besides, Pi day is fun. I did not get to eat any.

I actually prefer cake to pi. I tried to find my Pi shirt for yesterday but could not. Ain't it funny that if you write 3.14 on a piece of paper and hold it up to a mirror, it spells PIE? Wheee!

It is really something ! He can learn the pi of thirty digits by rote ! It is hard to recite such infinite non repeating decimals.

I have been saying 3.141592654 for enough years that I could probably add four digits to it now. I don't think I'll ever get to infinity, though.

@LadyDuck Yep. It's easy for an American to be fooled by a European date, unless it's after the 12th of the month.

The other worker did. But the kid hadn't heard of it. I have a plan for helping him remember 3.14.

Big One likes to rattle off Pi to a string of decimal places too. Pi day doesn't really work here because it's 14/3 (or at least it was yesterday!)
