How do you arrange your books?

I read a short article about how people arrange their bookshelves. Some might do it by author or perhaps subject. Apparently, one op shop (thrift store) arranged their books by colour which seems a bit ‘off’. My books are arranged mostly by subject but too-large books are kept together on the shelves that will accommodate their height. So how do you arrange your books? I have about 14 shelves with an average of 40 books on each shelf so very roughly about 560 books. That’s not counting the larger books. Other shelves hold LP records, CDs, DVDs, etc. I would have had nearly twice that number of books before we moved here. The photo shows the bookshelves in the office. There are more books in the lounge.

All my books are mixed up and they often move to a new spot if I need one

We do the same, we arrange our books by subject, but those too large go all together on the shelves that will accomodate their height. I am re-arranging our DVDs now, no matter how we arrange them we can never find the film we wanted to watch. I am arranging them by actor now and on my database I add the name of the main actor.

@JudyEv - At least I can check if we already bought the book, because it happened that we bought a book in French when we lived in Monte Carlo, forgot about it and bought again later in Italian.

That's a good idea to have a data base so you can (hopefully) find what you want easily.

@LadyDuck I recently discovered I have two copies of one book too. Luckily it's one I like but I still can't read two at once! lol

Let's see now... Some of my books are arranged by topic, others by author, and others alphabetically... tall books in the tall shelves, short books in the short shelves...

My bookshelf in the living room is built in and somewhat small. Right now it's very messy and needs my attention but not today. We have a larger quote one in the basement that my brother made years ago I think. That one is much neater but we don't look at those books very often. I usually organize them by height. I no longer have many by the same author unless your were to count Bibles. We have a lot of those, different versions and types. I'm going to try to show my messy bookshelf it it'll load. Wow, I can't Believe it made it first try. Maybe I need to do long skinny images rather than square or rectangle.

@JudyEv when I was in my twenties I already had over three hundred. But I was planning on moving out of state without my car so I had to get rid of them. My parents didn't have room to store them.

I organize my books by size; tallest go first. That is how I do it as an adult. I’m sure when I was younger I probably did it by author.

I can understand that. I have the three Stieg Larsson books (Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, etc) but one is larger/taller than the others so I prefer to keep those together which then upsets any height arrangement. Life wasn't meant to be easy!

Mostly I have Christian non-fiction books and I don't do much to organize them other than by size. I want to see balance on the shelves. I used to have a lot more books than I have now so I arranged them by category (genre) as well as size.

I arrange my records by alphabetical order of musician. But my books (and CDs) are random. Guess that show my priorities.

Mine are not neat and orderly at all, and some are packed in boxes. I have gotten rid of a lot of them. The only ones really neat are all of my husband's "Chiltons" which are car repair books. They are filling and on top of one cupboard.

The part I most like about unpacking is arranging my books again out of the boxes. They all get muddles up as I pack them according to size.

I have my books by genre. Narrative is in a shelf in one of the rooms. Poetry is in a small closet and drama in in one shelf in another room. I´m glad that they are in different places as Anita does not take them from one room to the other. I used to have them by author too until she came. Not any more.

My bookshelf is solid oak, and the shelves are set and not adjustable. This means that I have to lie down some of the really large books, and make a stack like that while the others are standing beside it. It looks very interesting.

I don't have too many stacks that lie down but perhaps that would be a better use of some of the space. Most of my shelves are adjustable which is very handy.

That's a good idea to separate your books into those you've read and those you haven't. I think you do a lot of reading, don't you?
