Oh, ouch!!

Another student I work with has a lifeskills "job". She assists with the laundry from our class room. Face cloths, towels, bibs and shirt covers. Soiled clothing for a student. The laundry is in another building, a small walk away. That building houses the Special Education offices, and has an alternative school--very small--for students who cannot manage themselves in a regular environment. They often have laundry and so there is a washer and dryer in the custodial area. The custodian has a small dog she brings to work with her. He has always gotten along okay, for the last year and a half. He is a Boston Terrier. Every day this dog goes from the school portion of the building to the offices and has a treat with the secretary. When my student and I got there, the secretary was on the floor. The dog was playing with her and he had his treat. My student has interacted with this dog before. She is also impulsive and does not choose to listen to warnings. She said "Oh he's so cute!! Can I pet him?" and bent right down with me telling her to wait and the dog snapped. He bit her face. To me it looked like he had his muzzle over her entire nose and mouth. The secretary got him off quickly, and our guess is he thought she was going to take his treat. The head of Special Education came out. We cleaned my girl's face up, gave her something to put pressure on. She and I finished our work. She only had cried a little bit. I gave hugs. We went back to our building and saw the district nurse, who sent pictures to Mom. Dad came and took her to the ER. I felt like she maybe was in shock, as she only cried a little bit, a couple of times, and did not ask for hugs. This girl is a hugging maniac on any given day. At the Special Ed offices they talked like she would not even need to be seen, but the nurse said otherwise. The offices had told mom it was mostly some scratches. The nurse sent mom pictures. There was a big scratch between her nose and lip, a puncture on her lip, and a puncture under her chin. Everyone is so sad. The dog likely will not be allowed back at Oasis--the alternative school. The student will have to have some treatments, I am sure. I had to fill out a witness report. I hate paperwork, and I hate that this child got hurt. No one really was to blame. The student does not listen, the dog did not understand. So, how was your day?

Oh, that is sad. She certainly didn’t know better, and the poor dog was being a dog. I feel badly for them all.

Due to the impulsive nature of her disability, she does not listen. If I had had any idea we would walk into this situation, we would have taken a different route.

That is so sad. The child should not have been so quick and bad that the dog reacted thinking his treat was being taken from him, I hope that she won't be scared of dogs from now on, My day was just usual and I got all my blogging done,

Glad you had a productive day. This child has some disabilities and does not listen. We were telling her to wait and she did not.

I feel terrible for everyone. I hope that the worst that happens to the innocent dog is being left home.

Yes, he will be at home now. His owner is heartbroken as well.

That's very sad. As you say, no one was at fault, just an unfortunate accident.

It was unfortunate, but traumatizing for all, I think.

@JudyEv I knew she was in shock. She had to have 7 stitches and a glued place.

What a sad situation. I hate when there is a misunderstanding between dog and human. We had two rescue dogs (a bonded pair). The one dog thought he was being cornered and bit me. This was when we first got them. It turned out that dog and I became fast friends and he never turned on me again. He was just acting on instinct.

This pup likely thought she was after his treat.

@GardenGerty That could be. The rescues that we had were in a bad situation according to the shelter. Who knows how they were treated. Our little guy felt threatened.

That is sad. I don't trust Patch with kids and know she would snap at them. Hope the girl is not too bad.

I think the nurse is mostly concerned with scarring. She will talk about it a lot, but that is probably good.
