The next electrifying story

My first husband and I lived in a smallish house that was all put together with bits and pieces. That was okay, he was pretty handy when he got to be at home. He worked rotating shifts, and that was fine, except we did not have any cooling in the upstairs. We just opened the windows and used a box fan. It was okay even in the daytime. With his shifts he had to sleep days, sometimes. First hubby was Larry. Larry was upstairs on a hot day, getting ready for his nap. I was downstairs in the living room with the toddler reading or some such. Suddenly the lights dimmed. Yikes. Then came back up. It turns out that the knob for speed on the fan acted as a rheostat on the downstairs living room light. Obviously I told Larry about the light dimming, and due to our trouble shooting, learned the cause. Larry was reasonably handy and did some rewiring of the circuits. The next thing you know, if he would turn on the fan the front porch light came on. So back to trouble shooting. We did eventually get it right. It was at that time I developed my theory that haunted houses were often just a case of mixed up wiring.

Or old wiring. Most "hauanted" houses are often old, where the eletric has not been updated in.... ever. I am on the fence when it comes to my belief of the supernatural. But, when lights act on their own accord, I've always assumed it could be an eletric problem.

There are many things in nature we still do not understand, but this is my third house and it has its own electrical issues that I am in need of getting fixed.

That makes a lot of sense that strange wiring could make a house seem haunted. When car lights start to do funny things, indicators out of whack, etc, often it's because the wiring isn't earthed properly.

Is "earthed" the same as "grounded"? Seems it would be.

@JudyEv I think it is just a matter of language. Earth/ground same thing. I am not sure about the color of a ground wire. I thought a red wire was a HOT wire or active wire. Someone here would tell us, maybe.

@GardenGerty I guess so. There is an 'earth' wire which I think is the red one and if it isn't where it's supposed to be, all sorts of odd things happen. Does that help?

Yes, he was, except for plumbing. It made him throw tools, etc.

That was really a fun neighborhood, and I mean it sincerely. I had a neighbor who could tell me history of many of the little houses there and how they had been put together with moving containers, etc.
