One thing is for certain: when you get to 1984, you simply CANNOT ignore this album. It’s one of those albums that “everybody” owned back then. And what do you know, it’s now forty years old this year!! Wow. Let’s get rockin’. Working on the Highway - Bruce Springsteen There was no avoiding Born in the U.S.A. in 1984. Poor cloistered nuns probably had it piped in to their convents! It turned out to be the ninth biggest-selling album of the 1980s. (Somehow, I managed to see Bruce twice — without exorbitant scalpers — on the tour in 1985.) This is the Chuck Berry song! You see, ol’ Chuck got arrested once for transporting an underage girl across the state line (under the Mann Act). And that’s what our protagonist is doing here: despite the warning that “she’s just a little girl, she don’t know nothin’ about this cruel, cruel world,” off they go to Florida. Now, before you think ol’ Brucie is a pervert, do consider the fact that, throughout most of rock and roll up to that point (and probably to this day), “groupies” were considered “old” at 16. And it was a prevailing theme in songs (“sweet things from Boston so young and willing” from Steely Dan’s “Hey 19”) and movies (“Are you really 19?” in Fast Times At Ridgemont High). It’s also not a case of kidnapping, but consensual (“we got along all right”…and if it had been kidnapping, “her brothers” would have probably killed him instead of leaving him for the cops ). Wow, I just ruined a great song for you, didn’t I? Tune in next week, when I destroy “I’m on Fire.” Until then, rock out with Bruce. Working on the Highway Written by Bruce Springsteen Recorded by Bruce Springsteen From Born in the U.S.A., 1984 The judge got mad and they put me straight away:

@FourWalls I just didn't like that he got political..along with many others. It turns me off.

@RebeccasFarm — and his music suffered. I don’t think Jackson Browne’s overtly political stuff was nearly as good as his subtle things (like “Before the Deluge”). I think the best “political statement” is “Fortunate Son” by CCR, and nobody can top it and they know it, so they just get preachy instead of clever.

I think a lot of us “used to like him.” Then it was Bruce this and Bruce that, like Michael Jackson before and U2 after.

The Boss ruled with that LP. It was just a matter of time before the mass public caught on. With a Rock Chestnut on every LP leading up to that one, beginning with Greetings from Asbury Park, followed by The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town, and The River, he was a household name beyond NJ by the time that album came out. I think Born to Run put Bruce on the map commercially especially with his well-known title track. Born to Run was Springsteen's breakthrough album, but no denying the massive success of "Born in the USA." Of course, I'm biased, I'm from NJ...

And personally, I think Nebraska was a much better album. Very dark.

I love how he used to be so popular but now that he has educated in ways most won't. People like he is a piece of crap. Stop hearing what you want to hear and truly listen to people. You know how many artist say things that sound mainstream but they are really not. Its amazing how people get by in life. To be fair some of them are really good at it, still have to sell records.

There is something about him that turns me off. I don't like his music. But your right, you couldn't get away from Born In the USA back then.

I think he took two or three themes and drove them into the ground. Yeah, Bruce, blue collar guy can’t get a job on account of the economy and he goes back inside, has a few drinks, and says this is my hometown and I was born to run in the USA.

Huge fan here. At one time I was walking around with a sweatshirt that pictured Betty Boop and said Born in the USA while his song was out there and popular

Not one I know but enjoyed it. Seeing the young things screaming after their idols - some seem very, very young.
