Good news for Indians with private health insurance

I am sure many of us have bought private health insurance. At least, I have, for me and for my father. Insurance Regulatory authority (IRDAI) has now reduced moratorium period from 8 years to 5 years. So health insurance companies cannot reject your claims if you have renewed the policy continuously for five years or more. Now that is a great news for me at least. My Dad's hospitalization, if ever, is better covered, and mine too. I am seriously contemplating purchasing extra protect add on of Star as I already have comprehensive. Waiting period will be 5 years for it.... it is a great one. I don't have to incur anything from my pocket once I buy that. And..come this June/July, expect some reduction in GST for health insurance products. That reduction will neatly cover my add on premium. I am very happy today. I might even reduce my coverage from 7500000 INR to 5000000 as extra protect will cover me better. Only fear is, will insurance companies remain viable with this benefit, and if not, will I be able to move to another at that point of time, because insurance companies have a right to refuse policies. By the way, waiting period of 4 years for pre-existing diseases has been reduced to 3 years. So no need to pay extra premium for reducing that period. We can also avail claims from different BENEFITS policies as against INDEMNITY POLICIES. I needed a clarification there. If a person has bought multiple benefits policies from the same company, can he or she claim under different policies. Well, that is the good news today, apart from the news that gold is south bound.

When something (stock, bitcoin, gold) touches a new high, usually is time to sell and wait until it drops to buy back. I am glad you have good news for health insurance.

Linda has been saying so much that a gloom had set in. Not only is there the positive news from Insurance regulatory authority, even Supreme Court has mandated that charges be fixed within a range. All in all, it does seem like a good news for health.

@vandana7 The United States are surely not a good example about Healthcare. We have everywhere a much better system here in Europe.

@LadyDuck I feel sorry for those in the US. It may just get worse over the period, as taxpayers age, and younger generation is not adequate in number to pay taxes. Our insurance companies have been told to behave themselves it seems. LOL

I"m glad you have good news about your health insurance. I don't remember having a waiting period for pre-existing conditions with our insurance. Have a good day.

You would not have realized how the time has passed since you first bought the policy. But I guess there is no waiting period in the US, and it is mandatory only in India. Your situation is exactly what I feared. Dad's policy would take about 5 and a half years to reach full limit since there are two top ups. Now both the top ups will also be functional by 2026 July. And the base policy is already functional. Waiting 8 years would mean waiting till 2026 for base policy itself. You bet I am happy. As of date, Dad is covered for 500000 plus 300000 bonus plus 100000 of another policy. Next year it will be more and it will continue to increase till 7 years... scary this insurance stuff. LOL

Finally. Of late, insurance companies have been searching for flimsiest excuses to deny claims. People who have held the policies for long have not gotten anything whereas the directors showed plenty of profits. Time those profits were trimmed.

Health insurance is so important. Many people don't think it is worthwhile. In fact, my health insurance agent advises against health insurance and suggests that we put the money in mutual funds instead. LOL But I am very particular about the coverage.

@vandana7 We did that when we had a young family - put the funds away but later we decided we needed to have cover.
