We had a message from a friend today saying Harry, one of the last two of our sheep, had died.
We took in Harry and Solomon from a property that had been ravaged by fire. However, we hadn’t had them long and we decided to sell our property and move to the city. I told the previous owner the circumstances and she was happy for us to give the sheep to our friend.
Harry would have been quite old. He had got to the stage where he couldn’t eat easily and my friend was feeding him Weeties, a breakfast cereal. He died peacefully which was good to hear. In the photo, Harry is the one with the black face.

I am sorry for the loss of Harry. It seems you gave him a chance at a good life again, and made sure he later had a good home. You took good care of him and made sure he continued to have good care. I am glad he passed peacefully.

@JudyEv
You really did find a great place for Harry to live out his life in peace and enjoy what time he had left.

Sorry to hear about Harry. How long do sheep live anyway?

They say 10-12 years depending on their treatment and health. Harry wasn't very young when we got him about 4 years ago.

Sounds like he lived a good life and was cared for to the end. Sad that our animal friends don't live forever either.

@koopharper Our pet emu lived for 27 years which isn't a bad innings either for a bird.

Oh, I’m sorry. I am thankful that Harry had a good life after the trauma of the fire.

Sorry to hear of Harry's passing. Did your friend say how Solomon was holding up? Is Solomon grieving the loss of Harry?
Also, this is a weird question to ask, but do sheep discriminate against each other based on the color of their face (black vs. white)?

@JudyEv So it appears that discrimination based on color may not just be a human thing. And I guess in the animal world it may depend on whether the animal can see in color or only see in black and white.

@moffittjc It might be something to do with survival too, similar to animals turning on one of their own that is injured or sick.

I think they'd both been absorbed into the mob so probably Solomon doesn't miss him too much. I've never seen any indication that animals discriminate against one another because of their colour but sometimes hens will reject a chicken and that often seems to be based on colour. I had a black hen which totally rejected her white chicken but accepted the blacks and browns.
