60-Year-Old Songs: A World Without Love

The physical went well, and I’m having lunch to celebrate. Im also celebrating the great music from 1964 this month. Here’s another song from that wonderful year 60 years ago. Hope you remember this one. A World Without Love - Peter and Gordon Paul McCartney wrote this when he was 16. He also wrote “When I’m 64” when he was 16. Man, is it any wonder he became such a significant part of music! At the time, Peter Asher’s sister Jane was dating Paul, and that’s how this unknown folk duo got a song from the band that owned the 60s. This was Peter and Gordon’s first single; and, honestly, could you do better than having a song written by the songwriting nucleus of the #1 band on earth at the time to start with?? After all these years, it doesn’t need the Beatles connection to stand on its own. Neither did Peter and Gordon. They continued to have hits such as “I Go to Pieces” and “Lady Godiva.” After they broke up, Peter Asher became Linda Ronstadt’s producer during her superstar era. He’ll be 80 next week. Gordon Waller passed away in 2009. (Oh, and that Paul guy turned 82 yesterday. ) Maybe it was aided in its success by Beatlemania, but it’s still a dang good song.
