We use onions in almost every dish that we prepare. We also eat them raw in salads.
During my tour of the US we were taken to an Indian restaurant where onion rings were served as starters. I had never seen such huge rings. The onions that we get here in India are medium size.
While on my shopping spree in the US I looked for onions. My niece took me to her usual grocery store and there I saw giant sized onions. I bought one - funny that anyone would buy onions but looking at the size that you see in the photo surely anyone who had never seen that size would want to show it to those back home.
I do not remember when it was that I used it for cooking.

Onions do have names. In Italy we have red onions that are very sweet and delicious to make jams, those are Tropea Onions (Cipolle di Tropea).

It's interesting to hear about your experiences with onions in different countries! It must have been surprising to see the giant onion rings in the US. Onions are such a versatile and essential ingredient in many cuisines. Have you found any other interesting food items during your travels?

We were mostly taken to Indian restaurants as food is something one would want to eat that they are familiar with.
I so wanted to taste the Gelato ice cream in Italy but did not get a chance. Ofcourse I bought a whole lot of chocolates as I am a choco foodie I ate the Kivi fruit in New Zealand but I did not like it. When we were on our own I remember visiting a Mall in Melbourne and there we treated ourselvles to a buffet. I bought a huge guava from Bangkok that remained fresh until we returned.

@allknowing It's always interesting to try new foods, even if not all of them turn out to be favorites. Gelato in Italy and chocolates from different places must have been delightful. Do you have a favorite chocolate or dessert from your travels?

@annierose I like the Belgian chocolates and bought quite a few. I do not recall eating any exotic desserts while on our package holidays

My husband will buy the biggest he can find. I prefer the medium for most things. The big ones do make lovely onion rings, though.

We occasionally eat onions at home, and most of the time we use scallions

@allknowing This is the scallion in this picture. We will chop it up to make scallions, which are used for seasoning when cooking

I can’t eat onions raw, but my dad happily can. I like them sautéed with shrimp, asparagus, olive oil, garlic, and tomatoes the best. But honestly, onions are so incredibly good in almost all dishes. I am not a fan of red onions, but those pearl onions are my favorite.

We have red and white onions and mostly we use the red onions. They are cooked in so many different ways. I like onion pakoras - sliced onions deep fried dipped in gram flour batter.

There is a type of onion that is grown in Vidalia Georgia USA. It is the Vidalia Onion and it is known for it's rather sweeter taste.

We bengalis don't use onions for cooking for every dish. However I take them a lot, raw in summer in salads and raita.

Too many onions make your body odor smell like onions. I couldn't do the onions in every meal.
