How much did I actually save?

My mom needed to replace her knives so I was browsing the Internet for Zwilling J.A. Henckles knives, the ones with two people on the logo. A set of knives in the model she has now (Zwilling Professional S) is selling for over $600 and that's with the sale. She didn't want to spend that much so I found her a knife set that I have (Zwilling Twin Signature), except with more knives than mine. It is an 11-piece knife set.
I ended up getting the Zwilling Twin Signature 11-Piece Knife Block Set at Bloomingdale's. Currently, it is sold there for $299.99, which seems like a good deal. It is cheaper than at Macy's and the same price as on the Zwilling website.
After placing the order there was something I noticed that made me shake my head. At Bloomingdale's the crossed out price is $688.50, a savings of 56%. Those same knives at the Zwilling website have a crossed out price of $349.99, a savings of 14%. So how much did I actually save on the knives?

Probably nothing. lol. I mean, so often stuff like this doesn't actually ever sell for the price they want and the only way to move them is to drop the price. So, the moral of the story is if you can't sell them for the price asked, they aren't worth that because the market disagrees with the asking price. If people buy them at the discounted price, they are actually establishing that they are worth exactly what you were willing to pay for them.
Something is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay. Not what someone wants for it.

But there are people who would pay LOTS of money for something, even though it’s way overpriced. And they may even think they are getting a great deal. As can be the case with buying a car for example.

@porwest money is money. If you can sell something to someone for say 5x its cost why not?

@lovebuglena We, of course, cannot control what the idiots do. But I would be reluctant to lump them into anything logical to argue the tiny market THEY create makes sense. lol

I agree with Jeff, that is too much money for knives.

I’m sure these knives are not the best. But they are really good. Of course if they are not dull.
No dull knives are good.

Some stores list the merchandise for the suggested retail value which is the highest. That way they can offer a good sale and still make excellent money. Henckles knives are good knives. Have a good weekend.

My mom has hers since the 90s I think. Great knives. But you know my MIL has Henckles knives but the one person on logo and I’m not a fan of them.

Very questionable indeed! I've heard of markups but not over 50%. The Zwilling website seems to be the most accurate pricing. Management is playing number's games at Bloomingdale's in my view.
All in all, I believe you did make a good decision.

What I paid seems like a good deal but it would be better had they been a bit less.

If the knife set actually costs $688.50 at Bloomingdale's without the sale then it is crazy. And I wonder why it's more than 2x as expensive as Zwilling itself is selling it for? The $299.99 I paid is reasonable for these knives I think, though I wouldn't mind them being cheaper.
But it goes to show that a seller can put any price and then cross it out and put in a new price and make you think you are saving a lot of money when in reality you may not be.
