So, you’re wondering, just who can beat Don Henley on my list? It’s tough, but this just shows you the magnitude of greatness that the Lone Star State has given the music world. Let’s continue the countdown with today’s great.
#4: Buddy Holly
Welp, see ya tomorrow.
It’s always “what if.” You think about the songs this man wrote — songs that are still being recorded today, 65 years after his death — and you can’t help but wonder “what if.” Buddy Holly was part of the first induction class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, indicating the magnitude of influence he had on the world…with a career that was barely four years long.
You know the man. You know his music. You sadly know the story. But, as Crickets member Sonny Curtis wrote in a song, “The levee ain’t dry and the music didn’t die, ‘cause Buddy Holly lives every time we play rock and roll.”
What if.

Born Charles Hardin Holley
September 7, 1936, Lubbock
Died February 3, 1959, Clear Lake, Iowa (plane crash) (age 22)
HALLS OF FAME: Rock and Roll, Songwriters, Nashville Songwriters, Rockabilly, Texas Country Music

You may remember reading about my going to the Surf Ballroom in Iowa, and the plane crash site, when I was there in 2021. I get goosebumps just thinking about going into the Surf Ballroom.

Buddy Holly had nothing to do with that. Blame Don McLean.

@FourWalls I'm pretty tolerant about music but there are a couple of bands, singers, and songs that make me want to die. American Pie is one of them. You know the others.
