An eight hour appointment window

To read the gas meter at my mom's house someone had to get access to her garage as that is where the meter is. On many occasions the meter reading on the bill was estimate and not actual. And when the reading did happen to be actual that resulted in a much higher bill if the previous month's reading was an estimate. This summer, the gas meter has been changed and it's now supposed to be read remotely. That would mean meter readings from now on should be actual. The new bill that was issued shows an estimated reading rather than an actual one. I contacted the gas company to find out why and was told that the reading did not get picked up from the device so they had to estimate it. They are going to send someone next Monday to take a look at the meter. I was told that they will reissue a new bill after they read it so I do not need to pay the current one, which is about $126, too high for this time of the year. I hope that after someone comes to look at the meter there will be no more issues with remotely reading it. I don't want anymore estimated readings as that can mean overpaying. While it's great that someone can come and take a look at the meter what I don't like is that the time frame for the appointment is from eight in the morning to four in the afternoon. It is not right to have a customer potentially wait all day for someone to show up. And they won't call to let us know that someone is on the way. There will only be an appointment reminder call the night before.

Every company I've ever worked with were insane in ensuring you remembered you had an appoitment and wouldn't let you forget it. I hate those four to eight hour windows, too.

I just realized that when I chatted with a rep they said the available appointment is for 7/19/24. But we are in August. I am sure the person just made a typo and actually meant 8/19/24. I tried a few times to go back into chat to confirm that it is indeed 8/19 but was never actually connected to a rep after a bit of a wait and was disconnected from chat.

@lovebuglena Never heard of a company, until this post, that didn't do that. Every company I've ever delt with, has had people call when they were on their way or ask if they could come early.

If the time window is so long they should at least give a call shortly before someone is due to arrive that they are on their way.

I hate 8-hour windows too. Have you ever thought of signing up for Budget Billing? That way you get billed for the same amount each month. Have a good day.

I used budget billing several times in the past and hated it. They never calculated it right and every 6 months or so I'd have a massive settlement balance to pay.

@porwest We've never had that problem. They adjust the amount as the months go by. Have a good day.

@LindaOHio If they would have done that, it might have worked better. Our settlement balances were always $500 or more.

That’s good! This way you don’t have to let strangers into your home to read the meter. And it should ensure an actual reading, regardless of whether you’re home or not.

The city switched everything over to a meter when I still owned my home several years ago. So, it's all actual here. I hope they get it sorted soon so the bill reads correctly.

@just4him now new bill will be for a longer time period I reckon. Wonder how high it will be compared to the current one.

Guy came over Monday to look at the meter. Hopefully, there will be actual readings only from now on. He told my mom not to pay the current bill and that they will issue a new one.

That's a long time to have to hang around for the guy.

Yep. And even if you have the time it’s still wrong. Like if they decide to come towards the end why should a person spend the whole day waiting?

Yeah, those windows are a real pain in the butt. Like, I have MUCH better things to do than wait.

And if they end up coming towards the end why should I stay home all day waiting when I can be doing other things during that time?

@lovebuglena I'd rather they simply say, "We''ll give you a call or a text when they are a half an hour away." At least then you can better plan around it and at least be available, but not be on a virtual lockdown.

I agree! I understand they can't tell exactly how long it may take for all the appaointments, but they should at least break it down into before noon and after noon!

Yeah. They should give us a window of a few hours or so. Not most of the day.
