Our small state did well

The Olympics are over and done with. To our surprise, we found ourselves watching quite a bit of it. When it was all over, I found some of the statistics at the finish quite interesting.
The country, Dominica (pronounced Dah-min-EE-ka) is not the Dominican Republic. Dominica has a population of around 70,000 people and its Thea LaFond won gold in the women’s triple jump, the first ever Olympic medal for the tiny island.
The top three medal-winning countries with a population under 200,000 were all neighbours – Grrenada, Dominica and St Lucia. Looking at medals per head of population overall, Australia was 9th, Ireland 18th, Great Britain 24th, Canada 38th, USA 47th, and China 75th.
Of Australia’s states, West Australians brought home almost a quarter of the medals won by Australia. Not bad for a state that often gets forgotten about by our eastern cousins.
The photo wasn't taken at the Olympics but at an international 3-day event held at Fairyhouse in Ireland.

Those are some pretty interesting Olympic statistics.
There is one particular stat here in my community that I think is pretty impressive. When looking at the universities that the Olympic athletes attended, our local university--the University of Florida--had their athletes win so many medals that they would have been in 12th place overall in the medal count if the university was a "country."

@JudyEv Track and field and swimming are two huge sports at our university; I know athletes come from all over the world to attend our university and participate on the athletic teams.

Oh wow!!! that really is something to be proud about. I know a lot of our athletes owe the prowess to the USA as many attend colleges/universities over there so they can train with the best trainers and attend more competitions, etc. I think some attend your university. I'm sure I heard it mentioned from time to time.

@moffittjc And gymnastics? I had an idea one of the very successful gymnists studied in Florida.

Nice to get some recognition. Sis was telling me that someone from their small area there, who graduated with my nephew won a silver.

@JudyEv I don't know if there was a watch party or anything, but it was well known in the community

Well done Australia. You beat us in the medal table but we did pretty good. We throw a lot of money at it funded by our national lottery, so we should do well. As a nation of unfit fatties, it’s great that we can produce so many Olympians. I’ve missed my chance, so I’ll just admire from a distance.

@JudyEv I read today, that one of your Olympic cyclists, from Western Australia too, has defected to the UK.
What say you about that?

@Orson_Kart I won't comment on that specific case but years ago, Piggy Muldoon, one-time president of NZ, was asked what he thought of all the NZers flocking to Australia. He replied that he thought it was a very good thing as it would raise the IQ in both countries!!
Good luck to Matt Richardson. We've got plenty more coming from where he came from!

India did not win many medals because some 25 years ago, you decided not to be a great Hockey player or a Shooting star
But do not lose hope. I see many Top 10 finishes and hopefully more medals in the 2028 LA Olympics.

I think Prakash Padukone was a bit right in his criticism of Lakshya Sen.
A lot of money has been put in towards Sports Infrastructure and training.
Yet I think, Coaches, Athletes and Support staff need more psychological training to sharpen their focus.

Great going by Australia. I think the medals per head of population statistics shows that Australia has a good sports culture, as well as Government and Corporate sponsorship.
Yet, I am a bit surprised with US having 47th rank.
I would have expected them to have a better ranking.
Here, if we look at this ratio, India is still way behind many countries.
Yet from historical perspective, India has progressed well, but something comes in the way of medal for many. May be the instant mental pressure?
Anyways, great news for Western Australia. Yes, I too feel that Eastern and South Eastern states of Australia are more in the news.
Yet, this could change going forward.

Yes the challenges are many.
Yet if more emphasis is given on Sports culture, it can produce better results.

@JudyEv That is what I mean, the smaller, perhaps poorer countries have less to give to their children for athletic wear, and yet they manage to come out on top on the world's stage. It is amazing really, and makes one question the absolute need for such expensive athletic gear.

Maybe having such a good climate has something to do with it. However, many of our best athletes train overseas.
