Joliet Jake Rides Again

You’ve seen one prison, you’ve seen ‘em all, right? Well, not exactly. This particular prison is the old Joliet penitentiary, where part of The Blues Brothers was filmed. With my love of the movie I had to make a stop there.
Sorry, JJ.
The prison, like every other one I’ve toured, is quite run down. There’s a section of buildings near the tour entrance (upper left, the one that Jake Blues famously walked out of at the beginning of the movie) known as “the burnt district,” because three separate arson fires between 2013 and 2017 heavily damaged the buildings. They have not been repaired, despite the fact that this is now a tourist site. That’s part of the history of the prison, I suppose.
In the upper right you can see one of the “solitary” cells. It’s in infinitely better shape than most of the cells, which have paint that has peeled so badly it’s curled as it dangles from the walls. Also in the photos are one of the corner walls, with a guard tower, and the chapel, which is inscribed with a paraphrase of Ezekiel 18:31: “Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit.”
Baby Face Nelson and Leopold and Loeb were prisoners at Joliet at one time; however, the best-known inmate is a fictional one. And don’t think for a second that they don’t know that a lot of people are there because of The Blues Brothers connection. That’s why I went!!

That was such a great movie. I always wondered how many cop cars they trashed for that movie. Have a good weekend.

That was probably a bigger budget for the movie than the actors!

@LindaOHio — one of the great scenes in the film. They’re “window shopping” while zooming through the mall!

I have watched several episodes of shows where paranormal researchers go into old buildings and test to see if they can experience any spirits in these areas. I wasn't surprised when the ones they did experience were angry and negative. What an interesting place.

@FourWalls .......Enjoyed the movie. I wonder how they chose the sites for films. It would be a fun job.

They all have their peculiarities. Like the one in Mansfield, Ohio, where The Shawshank Redemption was filmed.

I enjoyed walking around the grounds. It did kind of feel like boot camp, though.

Yes, there’s not a lot of diversity on the layout.

I remember the Blues Brothers movie with the beginning of the movie when Jake walks out of the prison to be picked by his brother.

I suppose that wiggly thing above the chapel door was supposed to be 'the good book'?

Yes. It has Roman numerals I-X on it, to represent the Ten Commandments. There was a banner hanging on the fence (you can see the scaffolding, so they’re doing work there) so I couldn’t get a straight view through the fence.

Did you bump into any spirits? I could just imagine some mean prison ghosts, A long time ago a friend went to check out a prison just forget where. She came back and said she was sure she ran into a ghost, All the usual cold air, shivers, some kind of noises, and other things, Once all that stopped she looked down at her feet and saw a link of rusted chain it hadn't been there when all that started,
