It’s a two-fer countdown, as I close out the year with my one hundred favorite songs that charted on the Billboard country charts, and the 100 favorites from the “hot 100.” Your head will spin, especially when there’s a hard-core country song and a punk song on the same day. Here’s the opening song for the country list. Amanda - Don Williams And let me stress that it’s the Don Williams version that I prefer. While it was a relative “bomb” compared to Waylon Jennings’ #1 version from 1979, there’s just something special about the Williams version. Well, for starters, it was the first version I heard. Additionally, that warm, soft voice of Williams suits this tender love song better. More people associate this with Waylon, but I always go back to Don Williams for this classic. Amanda Written by Bob McDill Recorded by Don Williams From Don Williams Volume One, 1973 Peak Chart Position: #33 Today’s rock song: “Africa” Fate should’ve made you a gentleman’s wife:

That’s the good news/bad news about this. Bad news: 100 country songs. Good news: 100 that aren’t.

When it comes to country, it's a love/hate relationship for me. I have to be in the mood for it, for one. And it has to be the older stuff usually. The new country just doesn't appeal to me. I like this one though, although it would not hardly top my list.

My friend and I ended up matching on 13 songs, which should tell you how personal music tastes are and how difficult a serious undertaking of a task like this is.

@porwest — I named this “favorites” for a reason. I’m not presumptuous or narcissistic enough to believe my tastes are the end-all, be-all in anything (except Hank Williams, of course ). “Best” doesn’t have a set-in-stone definition. People call Hendrix or Page “the best”? I’d rather list to Knopfler or Django or Richard Thompson.

@FourWalls Lists will forever be made, and will forever be challenged, as well it will remain quite challenging to make lists.

Sorry Ms Walls, but that does nothing for me.

That’s okay. There are lots of songs “loved by the masses” that do nothing for me. Personal taste, that’s all it is.

Know the song but I think the Waylon version is the one I usually heard

Waylon’s version was much more popular and is usually “the” version in most opinions. So I’m weird.

It’s a gorgeous song, and I just think Don’s great voice is more suited for it. Sorry, Waylon.

Nice pick with Don Williams’ "Amanda"! His version definitely has that warm, classic feel.
