Good afternoon! With the remnants of the hurricane heading in our direction I decided the safest place today is home. However, when you eat at home, you have to cook it, you don’t order it!
So now that lunch is done, I’ll go to the lists of 100 favorite charted songs in country and pop. Today it’s rock’s turn to go first, and here it is!
Girls Talk - Dave Edmunds
Dang, but I love Dave Edmunds. I’m so sorry that he never became popular in the U.S. He only had three top 40 hits, the biggest of which was his cover of “I Hear You Knockin’.”
His association with Nick Lowe produced some incredible music curiously tossed in the “new wave” category. Of course, that does fit here, as Elvis Costello wrote this song.
Oddly enough, I love Costello, but his version is my least favorite of the three. Linda Ronstadt covered this on her new wave album Mad Love (“Now everybody think the new wave is super, just ask Linda Ronstadt or even Alice Cooper” — Weird Al) and it smokes. Edmunds’ version was the first version released.
It’s one of those great Costello songs (with that opening line, “There are some things that you can’t cover up with lipstick and powder”) that’s a longtime favorite.

From Repeat When Necessary, 1979
Peak chart position: #65
Today’s country song: “Della and the Dealer”

A very catchy one which I like although a top 100 favorite not sure about that. But what do I know, Dave was big in England with this tune doing way better there. Nothing like a home field advantage as they say in the sports world.

That shows just how difficult this project was. It’s never a case of “is this a better song than ‘The Boxer’ (which didn’t make the cut)?” No, it’s a question of “what has stuck with me all these years?” So a song that’s nothing deep gets a nod over a profound tune. Anyone who’s seriously tried to categorize their “all-time favorites” has had the problem.
