Cats and their lifestyle

It is amazing how cats know how to live. They need no training. They take their own decisions. We have had many cats and I have observed how they live. In the photo you see them relaxing in the sun - they probably know they need vitamin D.
Here cats are not confined in houses. They are free to move around. They even decide to leave and never come back despite all the love and care we give them.

Studies show that cats that are indoor-only live longer healthier lives. Our country is full of strays and ferile cats as well, but we still try to get them off the streets if at all possible. If for no other reason then to fix them. In a lot of cases we can return them to the colonies, but we also have a percentage of indoor-only cats, too. as well as indoor-outdoor cats.
I love cats in general. I've always been more of a cat person anyway. Cats still need and want our love, I firmly believe that, but they are happy to do their own thing.
As for them seaking sunlight, they're looking for heat sorces. If you're not careful, a cat can get dangerously close to a fire. In fact, our cat Chinnia, loved to get under my husband's airplane lamp and that sucker would burn you if you weren't careful. scared my husband, George. She would also get on top of our display case (made of all glass) because cats in general, love high places. This too scared my husband, because he worried that the force in which she'd land on it would cause it to shatter (never did) and she weighed no more then seven pounds.
I've had a handful of curious smart orange cats that learned how to do a lot of things (like open doors) but they are deffently driven by instinct.

Interesting post. Thank you
Our cats I could say are indoor/outdoor And about indoor cats living a longer life I agree but their life is restricted. Cats love to roam around meet other cats and even visit other homes. Neighbours let them eat and so do we. They may not live long but they live a full life.
I had visited a friend in the US when I was on holiday there. She keeps her cat inside for days when she goes on tours. The cat has enough food, enough water and a litter box and that's it. Yes I am sure that cat will live for many years. I would say exist and not live.
And about cats getting in danger searching for heat I may add they know where danger lies.

Good you gave your cat the choice and she chose to be indoors and this perhaps her life as a stray must not have been good and this happens but most here prefer being outdoor cats. They are also gfiven a choice. Ours have always been more in than out and this by choice.
Cats abandon their babies and those are rare cases. I am talking about whatis normal. There are lots of isolated cases where tom cats are known to eat kittiens.

@allknowing Depends on the cat. Cats can develop complications much like people do, such as feline dementia. A healthy cat might, but that's an adult. But, a kitten on the ther hand might not notice the danger because they need the heat. Kittens can't regulate their temp until they get older. And, like with people, some mother cats have been known to abandon their young for various reasons. Not all mother cats will, but some do.
Cats do like to roam and hunt, that's true. But, cats can live fifilled lives as long as humans play with them, and don't ignore them. The friend you visited, probably shouldn't have had a cat. Cats require a lot of work, time and attention.
Many people often feel that cats are aloof creatures who don't need anything more then to be fed. But, that's not true. They like to play, they like to cuddle, they love affection from humans.
I also have seen first-hand cats who adapt easily to the indoor-only lifestyle. I've had several over my lifetime, including one who spent eight years of her life as a stray who would go into a person's appartment if she were inclined or allowed. We took her with us when we moved into this house, and we offered her the option to be an indoor-outdoor cat, and she chose to be an indoor-only cat, living another five years with us.

I have now stayed detached as it is too much if they do not return but they need their freedom

The only reason they stay with us is because they get to eat and sleep. (lol)
