Does your robot vacuum shout obscenities at you?

Vince's photo is of a wattle bird and has nothing to do with the discussion. I’ve just posted about personal data and images being lifted from some makes of cars. Another news item which is a bit worrying tells how robot vacuum cleaners in multiple American cities were hacked. The robots were all Ecovacs Deebot X2s, made in China. The attacker physically controlled the robots, which were filming inside the houses. The speakers on the robots were yelling obscenities, including abusive racial slurs. A bit of backstory: When we bought our robot vacuum, Vince went for a very modern one but didn’t realise that it only speaks an Asian language. I wouldn’t know if it was abusing me or not. Here's a link to the article: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-10-11/robot-vacuum-yells-racial-slurs-at-family-after-being-hacked/104445408

I have a Roomba Robot...it was a gift I thought I didn't want, several years ago. I do have to say Rosie is very quiet and fairly well behaved. She hasn't talked back or uttered a single obscenity. Maybe she just hasn't been hacked yet?

@MarieCoyle Roberta was naughty once and started chewing up the bath mat - but maybe it was my fault for not picking up the map. lol

We got ours years ago not with all those modern gimmics. We got rid of it as vacuum cleaners need a lot of pampering as opposed to the simple broom.

That is very startling and frightening information. I had no idea of any of this. It is having me rethink my planned purchase of a robot vacuum. I do not trust our older SUV as it has OnStar in it, which the driver can use to gain directions and it contacts you in case of an accident when the airbags are deployed. I wonder what items are safe these days when it comes to anything electronic.

I agree. You wouldn't really know what has what these days. I had no idea vacuum cleaners had cameras.

@JudyEv I know that the webcams on our laptops are not considered private, and smart TV's are not either. I just hope that our microwave isn't listening or watching us.

I remember reading about baby monitors being hacked in several homes here in America. Can you imagine? These people were just in their homes, and a voice starts verbally abusing them. That would scare the heck out of me. But a robotic vacuum I would never even imagine!

I wouldn´t know. I still have my very old vaccuum cleaner which is not a robot. The only "new" thing I have bought is Alexa and I mainly use it as a clock.

I didn't even know there were those types of vacuums that talked. I didn't own it need one as we for rid of all our carpet. What's the purpose of a talking vacuum? I have seen the older models vacuuming floors a few times. Here I thought maybe the bird was taking and someone thought it was the vacuum.

Our vacuum works on tiled floors. The 'English' vacuums I've seen say things like 'going back to base' or 'recharging' - that's about all.

This is the problem with excessive use of Technology. I too am an IT Professional but the excessive publicity of AI, Data and Tech Driven initiatives is sometimes far in excess. It would have been better to have provided Robots with chips inside but no Outside Network provision. Perhaps this is the reason that Indian Government is so wary of Businesses from China operating in India. Yet, a lot of what we use are so much more Internet enabled than before. In a novel "The Patriot Attacks" (inspired Robert Ludlum series but written by another author), we see a scenario where Internet enabled cars are "hijacked" by hackers and terrible things - accidents etc start happening. The scenario is a bit unrealistic yet something that cannot be ruled out in the future and very scary as well!

@JudyEv And there are Capitalists who want maximum profit even at the cost of crossing what can be considered as an Ethical boundary. The probable outcomes can be scary and one cannot rule out a Terminator like world !
